Battle at the Box Office 7/9

It wasn’t quite up to the level of the Sam Raimi Spider-Mans but The Amazing Spider-Man easily took the weekend, and the holiday week, with $65 million for the weekend and $140 million total, since the movie came out on Tuesday.  It’s a little bit under the first Raimi Spider-Man, which made $144 million it’s opening week but it’s way down from Spider-Man 2 and 3, which made $180.1 million and $176.2 million respectively.  Spidey has one more solid weekend to make money before The Dark Knight Rises comes out and destroys it and every other movie currently out.  Ted moved down to second place with $32.6 million and bringing it’s two week total to over $120 million, so expect plenty more movies from Seth MacFarlane in the near future.  Brave held solid at third with another $20 million.  Savages came in at fourth place with $16.2 million, which is the third highest opening for Oliver Stone and his best R rated debut.  Rounding out the top 5 was Magic Mike, with $15.6 million.  Elsewhere in the rankings, Katy Perry: Part of Me continued the recent trend of 3D concert movies bombing, coming in eighth place with $7.2 million.  There were also battling indie movies at ninth and tenth place with ninth going to the widely available Moonrise Kingdom, with another $4.6 million over the weekend and tenth going to Woody Allen’s latest, To Rome with Love, which opened wide in it’s third week out and made $3.5 million.
