Battle at the Box Office 4/14

Captain America’s greatest threat wasn’t HYDRA but Rio 2 this past weekend, as it just managed to beat the animated sequel.  Cap 2 made another $41 million and has topped over $159 million domestically and over $317 million worldwide.

Rio 2 actually won the Friday box office but lost the total weekend to Cap.  It made $39 million, almost exactly on par with the first Rio and it’s one of the higher CG animated openings recently, nowhere near Lego Movie but beating Peabody and Sherman and the like.

New horror movie Oculus, riding some strong reviews, took third with $12 million, slightly down from Insidious and Sinister but still about average from that production group.

Kevin Costner had fairly weak opening for his football drama, Draft Day.  It was down from Costner’s most recent starring role, 3 Days to Kill, and it was also low compared to recent sports dramas, like Moneyball.

Divergent rounded out the top 5 with another $7.5 million.

The Raid 2 expanded to almost 1,000 theaters this past weekend and almost made it onto the top 10, coming in at 11 with just over $1 million.  Most people found the first Raid on DVD/Blu-Ray/VoD, so I imagine something similar will probably happen for The Raid 2 instead of heading out the limited number of theaters playing it.
