Musical Montage: Three 6 Mafia “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp”

The phrase “Academy Award Winners Three 6 Mafia” probably seemed like the ramblings of a madman before 2006 but at the 78th Annual Academy Awards, that phrase became a reality.  Working on the soundtrack for Hustle & Flow, which also got a Best Actor nomination for Terrence Howard.  The movie follows Howard as DJay, who is a drug dealer and pimp who wants to try and make a better life for himself and, after getting a keyboard and reuniting with an old friend in the music industry, DJay tries to become a hip hop artist.  His big single is “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp”, which got Three 6 Mafia their Oscar.  The competition wasn’t exactly tight for Best Original Song that year with a song from Crash and a song from Transamerica by Dolly Parton being it’s only competition.  Moral of the story, Three 6 Mafia has more Oscars than Gary Oldman or Leonardo DiCaprio.  Check out the song below.
