Battle at the Box Office 5/19

GODZILLA

Nobody was expecting Godzilla to lose the box office this weekend but it’s pleasantly surprising just how big a return the King of the Monsters had.  Godzilla took in over $93 million, making it the second highest debut of the year so far behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier and tripling the opening of last year’s kaiju fest, Pacific Rim.  Godzilla 2 is, obviously, in production, so hopefully this is a new, long reign for the king.  Adjust for inflation, the 1998 disaster from Roland Emmerich made just over $74 million in it’s opening weekend.

In a far distant second was Neighbors, making another $26 million, putting it just over $91.5 million for it’s two weeks out.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 dropped another 56% to third place with only $16.8 million and it’s made $172.2 million for it’s three weeks out.  It’s been doing excellent overseas, so it definitely won’t bomb but it’s probably kind of a disappointment for Sony.

Million Dollar Arm debuted at a kind of mediocre fourth place with $10.6 million.  It’s below recent baseball movies like Moneyball and Trouble with the Curve but managed to be a little better than football bomb, Draft Day.

The Other Woman rounded out the top 5 with another $6.3 million, putting it just over $71 million total.

Lower on the list, Legends of Oz continues to be a disaster, coming in ninth place in it’s second week with a little under $2 million and only making about $757 per theater.

X-Men: Days of Future Past should dominate this weekend although Adam Sandler’s Blended will most likely be pretty strong as well.
