Disney seems to have another hit on their hands as Maleficent opened to over $70 million this past weekend, easily crushing all comers at the box office.  It’s the biggest ever opening for Angelina Jolie and way up for Disney’s live action efforts, which have been some of the biggest flops of recent years like The Lone Ranger and John Carter.  It’s target audience may get drawn to The Fault in Our Stars this coming weekend but it’s also kind of the only family movie for a few weeks, so it should remain strong.  It’s international gross puts it over $100 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past dropped to second with another $32.6 million, dropping almost 65% from last weekend.  It’s made over $162 million for it’s two weeks out.

In a distant third was the shocking bombing of A Million Ways to Die in the West.  Ted was the biggest hit of the summer in 2012 and Family Guy/American Dad continues to be strong on Fox, so it seemed like the next Seth MacFarlane movie was a guaranteed hit.  Million Ways barely made a third of Ted’s opening weekend with $17 million and it’s more on par with movies like Year One, The Dictator and Land of the Lost.

Godzilla and Blended rounded out the top 5.

Everything else had pretty standard drops, moving down a place or two from where they were last weekend.
