Musical Montage: Bach “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor”

It’s October which means it’s time to bust out the spooky music for Musical Montage.  For this month, we’ll be featuring classical/instrumental music that is closely associated with horror movies both old and new.   Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is an iconic piece of music from Johann Sebastian Bach, usually played on a pipe organ, and has been used in various movies over the years, like 1931’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea but it’s probably most closely related to the monster who actually plays organ, The Phantom.  Hammer’s 1962 version of the story had The Phantom playing the piece and Family Guy composer Walter Murphy even created a discoized version of the piece for a concept album called Phantom of the Opera.  Check out the piece below.
