Southpaw Trailer

southpawmovie

Jake Gyllenhaal is pulling a Christian Bale and going from the gaunt, creepy Lou Bloom of last year’s excellent Nightcrawler to bulked up boxing champion Billy Hope in the upcoming boxing movie, Southpaw.  Directed by Antoine Fuqua, taking a break from working with Denzel, the movie follows Hope, who is a world champion until a tragic accident leaves his wife (Rachel McAdams) dead and him a wreck after turning to drugs and alcohol and the state takes away his daughter (Oona Laurence).  Desperate to get her back, Hope turns to boxing coach Titus “Tick” Wills (Forest Whitaker) to work his way back.  Eminem was actually originally supposed to star but he had to bow out but still contributed the song you hear in the back half of the trailer.  It looks like a solid boxing movie and Gyllenhaal definitely hit a new level of acting last year with Nightcrawler, so I’m excited to see what he does next.  It’s out in July and you can check out the trailer below.
