Battle at the Box Office 5/25

tomorrowland

On a fairly slow Memorial Day weekend, Tomorrowland, despite lukewarm reviews (including ours), took the top spot at the box office with $32.9 million and $58.8 million worldwide.  It’s way off from Brad Bird’s animated openings and most likely well below Bird’s last movie, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, although that movie’s opening weekend was in 425 theaters to start with.  It’s the seventh highest opening for George Clooney, between Ocean’s Thirteen and The Monuments Men.

Last week’s number one, Pitch Perfect 2, dropped to second with another $30.8 million, putting it over $109 million for it’s two weeks out.  The movie did have a pretty high drop off of 55% from it’s opening weekend.

Mad Max: Fury Road took third with another $24.8 million, but it only dropped 45% from last weekend, which is most likely because of the ridiculous word of mouth (I have not seen anyone who didn’t think it was less than incredible).

The other new release for this week, Poltergeist, had a mediocre opening coming off mediocre reviews, coming in fourth with $22.6 million.

Age of Ultron rounded out the top 5 with another $21.6 million and it’s made over $1.2 billion worldwide so far.

Elsewhere on the list, indie Far from the Maddening Crowd expanded wide and took eighth with $2.2 million.
