Battle at the Box Office 9/14

PERFECTGUYREV

Despite not being shown to critics, The Perfect Guy took the top spot at the box office with $26.7 million.  It’s a better opening than last year’s No Good Deed, which came out the exact same weekend then and it’s the fifth weekend in a row that a movie aimed predominately at African-American audiences has taken the top spot at the box office.

M. Night Shymalan redeemed himself slightly with The Visit, which got much better reviews than his last few movies but it was one of his lower box office openings, only beating Lady in the Water and the very limited released Wide Awake.  It was the seventh best opening for a Jason Blum produced movie, between Paranormal Activity 4 and Insidious Chapter 3 and it’s the best performing Blumhouse production for the year so far.

War Room dropped to number three with another $7.4 million, putting it over $39 million for it’s three weeks out and it was in an additional 121 theaters over the weekend.

A Walk in the Woods and MI: Rogue Nation rounded out the top 5.

Nowhere near the success of War Room, although it was in way less theaters, was 90 Minutes in Heaven, which opened in ninth place with $2.2 million.

Elsewhere on the list, Transporter: Refueled took a pretty big tumble from the last week’s opening, going from fourth to eighth.

Inside Out, thanks to it’s final push in theaters by Disney, is now the third highest grossing movie of the year domestically, passing Furious 7.
