Battle at the Box Office 12/28

The Force Awakens continued to shatter every record in it’s second week out, crossing over $544 million domestically and $1 billion worldwide, the fastest movie to break the $1 billion mark and the best second weekend of all time with $153 million, dropping only 38% from last weekend.  A lot of people I know and a lot of people I follow on Twitter or on podcasts have seen this movie at least 2 and sometimes up to 4 or 5 times and at the pace it’s going, it has a very real shot to top Avatar and become the highest grossing movie of all time.

For the Christmas releases, Daddy’s Home was a shockingly solid second place, despite mediocre reviews.  It made $38 million, up from the last Wahlberg/Ferrell team up The Other Guys and the third best Christmas Day opening of all time.

Joy took third with $17.5 million, the best opening ever for David O. Russell, although to be fair, most of his movies had a very limited opening weekend.  In American Hustle’s second weekend, when it was actually widely released, it made $19 million.

Sisters and Chipmunks rounded out the top 5, both basically making exactly the same as last weekend but dropping a few spaces because of the new competition.

Concussion was the lowest wide release for Will Smith with $11 million and sixth place, behind Legend of Bagger Vance but it also had solid reviews, a good audience score and a Golden Globe nod, so it could be a slow burn over the next few weeks.

The Big Short expanded wide and went from 19th to seventh with $10.5 million while the new Point Break took in $10.2 million and eighth place.

In 100 70mm theaters, The Hateful Eight took in $4.5 million and eleventh place, it’s supposed to expand wider this coming weekend.
