ABC’s Galavant wrapped another season of hilariously meta musical hi-jinks last night and while it’s not clear if another season is on the way, it’s still worth going back and checking out both the first and second season. An homage to classic fairy tales, Galavant follows the titular hero, played by Joshua Sasse, who tries to rescue his true love Madalena (Mallory Jansen) from the lovably goofy tyrant Richard (Timothy Omundson) but finds that Madalena has actually embraced her new power and wealth and becomes the true villain of the show. There’s a ton of guest stars in both seasons like Weird Al, Nick Frost, Kylie Minogue, John Stamos, Hugh Bonneville and more and the music is composed the legendary Alan Menken, responsible for the music of the golden age of 90’s Disney, with help from Christopher Lennertz and Glenn Slater. All the music is full of meta jokes and innuendo and, especially in the second season, they are frequently homages/parodies of famous show tunes. The song that introduces the entire series is below, if you check it out and enjoy the tone, you’ll probably love rest of the show.
