Battle at the Box Office 4/24

The-Jungle-Book-2016

The Jungle Book continued to dominate at the box office this weekend with another $60.8 million, putting it over $191 million for it’s two weeks out.  It’s now Jon Favreau’s third highest grossing film of all time and should easily outpace Cinderella and Maleficent as far as Disney reboots go. It’s also made over half a billion world wide.

In a distant second was The Huntsman: Winter’s War with $20 million, barely a third of what Snow White and The Huntsman made in it’s opening weekend.  The confusing marketing and lack of clarity about if it was a prequel, sequel or both probably turned off a lot of audience members and the first movie didn’t exactly have a strong following either.  The budget was $115 million and it’s made $100 million worldwide but there’s also marketing costs as well, so it’s probably not going to be the hit Universal was looking for.

Barbershop: The Next Cut dropped to third with another $10 million, putting it over $36 million for it’s second weekend out and is just shy of passing the total gross of Beauty Shop.

Zootopia and The Boss rounded out the top 5, with the former closing in on $1 billion worldwide with $907 million.

Down lower on the charts, Mexican indie Compadres made it into the top ten at ninth place with $1.3 million in 368 theaters.

The higher profile Elvis & Nixon made $456,793 at 381 theaters and came in 20th place while critically acclaimed thriller Green Room had a slight expansion and took in $215,000 on 30 screens, good for over $7,000 per theater.
