  • The Rock adds “Skyscraper” to his project list: As if he wasn’t busy enough, The Rock is reteaming with his Central Intelligence director Rawson Marshall Thurber for an action movie called Skyscraper.  There isn’t too much detail but it’s being pitched as a Die Hardesque action movie set in a high tech skyscraper in China.
  • Tom Hiddleston may be the Bond frontrunner: With Daniel Craig apparently not returning to Bond even for $100 million, the hunt for a new 007 has been on and there’s a rumor that Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston, may be in “advanced negotiations” to take over the role.  Jamie Bell and Idris Elba were also names being tossed around.
  • Westworld supposedly debuting this Fall: Long in development, HBO said this week that their remake of the Michael Crichton film Westworld is finally coming sometime this fall.  They did not give a specific date however, so it could possibly still slip to next year or beyond.
  • Mirror’s Edge becoming a TV series: Endemol Shine Studios has gotten the rights from EA to adapt Mirror’s Edge into a live action action series following the game’s heroine Faith as she works as a “runner” in the game’s dystopian future, delivering messages and avoiding government troops.
  • Mike Tyson joins Kickboxer: Retaliation: Even though we haven’t seen anything yet from Kickboxer: Vengeance, work on the sequel is already underway and Mike Tyson has joined the cast as a convict forced to fight in prison and the main plot finds Alain Moussi’s Kurt Sloane heading to Thailand to take on a new foe in Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson aka The Mountain from Game of Thrones.
  • Limitless cancelled: During last week’s upfronts, Limitless’ fate was still up in the air as CBS was apparently shopping it to other networks, including streaming, but now it seems no one has bit and the show is officially cancelled after a great first season.
  • The Americans renewed for two more seasons: FX has renewed their criminally underrated spy show The Americans for two final seasons that will wrap up the story of Soviet agents Elizabeth and Phillip Jenner.  I’m wondering if they are going to do some sort of time jump so we can see the Jenners’ reaction to the end of the Soviet Union.
  • True Detective most likely dead at HBO: After the disastrous second season, it seems like HBO is most likely not going to pursue a third season of Nic Pizzolatto’s crime anthology show.  Pizzolatto is still under contract at HBO, so there could be a different, non-True Detective show from him in the future.
  • Disney/Netflix deal goes into effect in SeptemberBack in 2012, Disney and Netflix signed a deal that Netflix would become the exclusive streaming service for Disney films and shows and that deal will go into full effect in September.  Classic animated films, Marvel films and Star Wars movies will only be available on Netflix, with the exception of The Force Awakens that is part of an arrangement with Starz, where most of the Disney films were airing previously.  There’s no specific titles announced as coming in September.
  • Comixology debuts Unlimited service: The premiere digital comics store, Comixology, has debuted an “unlimited” service this week, where you can pay a flat fee of $5.99 a month and read as many comics as you want from publishers like IDW, Image, Boom, Oni and Dark Horse.  Marvel and DC are unfortunately not part of the deal, as Marvel has their own Unlimited service, for instance.  Titles will be rotated in and out Netflix style.
  • New Halloween film coming from John Carpenter and Blumhouse: John Carpenter is helping to bring back Michael Myers with help from the current leader in horror films, Blumhouse.  It’s not a remake, but a new entry in the franchise, with Carpenter executive producing and possibly Mike Flanagan, of Oculus and Hush, directing.
  • New Garfield movie coming: A new, fully CG animated Garfield movie is coming soon from Alcon Entertainment and Garfield creator Jim Davis is executive producing.  No word on plot, casting or directing yet.
