Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took the top spot away from Doctor Strange in it’s opening weekend but it wasn’t quite up the level of it’s parent franchise.  Fantastic Beasts made $75 million, which is two million below the lowest performing Harry Potter movie, The Order of the Phoenix.  It’s made $145 million worldwide, putting it’s total at $220 million.

Doctor Strange dropped to second with $17.6 million, putting it over $181 million for it’s three weeks out and it’s made over $572 million worldwide, putting it tenth overall ahead of Ant-Man, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Incredible Hulk.

Trolls dropped to third and took in another $17.5 million, putting it over $116 million.

Arrival and Almost Christmas rounded out the top 5.

Down further, the other new releases did not fare very well.  The Edge of Seventeen, despite praise from critics, only took in $4.8 million, putting it in seventh place while Bleed for This took eighth with $2.4 million, barely above the other recent boxing biopic Hands of Stone, which was in half as many theaters, and way down from Creed and Southpaw last year.

In limited release, Manchester By the Sea took in $241,230 in 4 theaters, the best per theater opening for Roadside Attractions while Nocturnal Animals took in $494,000 from 37 theaters.
