Battle at the Box Office 1/2

Rogue One closed out 2016 and started 2017 at the top of the box office for the third weekend in a row, bringing in another $64 million and putting it over $439 million total for it’s three weeks out.  Combined with it’s international take, it’s made over $789 million worldwide and is the seventh highest grossing film of 2016.

Disney absolutely dominated the box office in 2016, with the top four highest grossing films of 2016 belonging to them, including the highest grossing film worldwide, Captain America: Civil War.  The studio made $11.3 billion from all their releases this year.

With no new releases over the New Year’s weekend, things pretty much stayed the same on the charts.  Sing stayed at number 2 with another $56 million, bringing it up to over $180 million and Passengers stayed in third with $20 million, putting it up to over $66 million total.

Moana took fourth with $14 million, putting it up to over $213 million total and Why Him? rounded out the top 5 with $13 million.

Manchester By the Sea and Fantastic Beasts both jumped back into the top 10 after being outside of it last weekend, coming in ninth and tenth respectively.

New movies and expansions of smaller movies start again this Friday for the first full weekend of 2017.
