Battle at the Box Office 1/23

M. Night Shymalan seems to have pulled himself back from the brink after back to back disasters culminating in The Last Airbender.  The Visit garnered good reviews and solid back office and now this past weekend, Split dominated the box office with his fourth highest opening of all time behind The Last Airbender and it was the fourth best January opening of all time as well with $40.2 million.  It also made $5.8 million overseas.

XXX: Return of Xander Cage took second with $20 million, better than State of the Union but about half as much as the original XXX made in 2002.  It was also below every Fast & Furious movie opening, even the lowest performing one, Tokyo Drift, but it did do better than Riddick and Pitch Black.  Thanks to it’s international cast, overseas it’s blowing up, making over $50 million so far and that’s probably where most of it’s take is going to come in, much like the Fast movies.

Hidden Figures dropped down to third with another $16.3 million, putting it over $84 million for it’s five weeks out.

Sing and La La Land rounded out the top 5 with the later losing 500 theaters and dropping from 2nd last week to fifth this week.

In sixth place, Rogue One broke across the billion dollar mark worldwide, getting up to $1,011,301,563 total.

In wide release, The Founder took ninth with $3.8 million while the other new release of the weekend, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, was a disaster with only $1.4 million, worse than last year’s concert film no one saw, Hillsong, and no where near any of the recent Christian themed movies released in the last few years.
