Battle at the Box Office 2/13

Despite a strong Friday debut from Fifty Shades Darker, America came to it’s senses and made The Lego Batman Movie number one at the box office.  It didn’t quite hit as big as WB was probably opening at $55 million (it was expected to be around $60 million or more) and it’s about $14 million less than it’s predecessor The Lego Movie made it’s opening weekend but it basically has no competition for the rest of the month (except for Rock Dog, a movie no one has heard of or has had any marketing) so it should hang around in the top of the list for a while.

Fifty Shades settled for second with $46 million, which is about $40 million less than the first movie made around Valentine’s Day in 2015.  It’s not clear if it will get a huge boost on Tuesday for the holiday or if people will care after the holiday but it could nosedive insanely next weekend (the original lost 74% of it’s box office from opening to 2nd weekend).

John Wick Chapter 2 took third with $30 million, double what the original made it’s opening weekend and Split and Hidden Figures rounded out the top 5.

Further down the list, Rings nosedived from second to seventh with only another $5.8 million in it’s second weekend, bringing it up to only $22 million for it’s two weeks out.  Based on comments from Paramount, it’s failure seems to be the start of the death of horror sequels, as they apparently cancelled the new Friday the 13th because they saw Rings failed to perform.

Internationally, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage exploded into China with the largest February opening ever for the country with $61.9 million and the largest Chinese IMAX opening as well.  It’s made over $230 million total worldwide.
