Battle at the Box Office 3/27

Beauty and the Beast stayed on top with the fourth largest second weekend of all time at $88.3 million, putting it over $315 million total for it’s two weeks out and hitting the $300 million mark in record time.  Worldwide, the movie has made over $374 million, putting it’s total to over $691 million and it’s easily the highest grossing movie of the year so far.

Power Rangers took second place with a better than expected $40.5 million, which puts on par with GI Joe: Retaliation and ahead of last year’s The Legend of Tarzan and TMNT: Out of the Shadows.  Audiences seemed to really like it as well as it got an A+ from Cinemascore, so it could stick around in the top 5 for the next week or so…or it could crash and burn, it really could go either way at this point.

Kong: Skull Island dropped to third with another $14.4 million, putting it over $133 million.  It opened in China this past weekend to $72.1 million, bringing it’s worldwide total to over $392 million.

Life took fourth place with $12.6 million, which was not quite what Sony was expecting and it’s on par with what Chappie made back in 2015.  Audiences didn’t really like it either with a “C” grade on Cinemascore, so it could drop off pretty quickly.

Logan rounded out the top 5 with another $10 million, putting it over $201 million domestically and with it’s international gross, it’s made over $565 million and it’s the third highest grossing X-Men movie worldwide.

Down in seventh, CHIPs had a fairly mediocre opening with $7.6 million, putting it below pretty much ever comparable movie and, in the realm of TV adaptations (and adjusted for inflation), it’s between the opening of 1997’s Flipper remake and 2005’s The Honeymooners remake.  It’s not one of the worst openings ever but this probably cements Baywatch as the big R rated TV show remake.
