Battle at the Box Office 4/17

There was no question Fate of the Furious was going to be huge but “Star Wars defeating” huge?  That’s insanity.

The Fate of the Furious brought in over $100 million domestically, making it the second best opening for the franchise behind Furious 7’s ridiculous $147 million but combined with it’s global box office, it had the largest opening of all time, defeating The Force Awakens, with $532.4 million, including $190 million from China, the biggest ever opening in that country.  In total the entire Fast & Furious franchise has made Universal over $4.5 billion now and it seems like Fate of the Furious could easily make a $1 billion by itself.

The Boss Baby was a distant second after two weeks at number one, making another $15.5 million and putting it over $116 million for it’s three weeks out.  It’s still kind of on the low end for Dreamworks, sitting in 22nd place overall between Bee Movie and Mr. Peabody & Sherman.

Beauty and the Beast took third place with another $13.6 million, putting it over $454 million domestically and, combined with it’s worldwide take, it’s crossed over $1 billion total and it’s currently the undisputed champ of 2017.

Smurfs and Going in Style rounded out the top 5 with both movies making around $24 million for their two weeks out.

The Chris Evans starring drama Gifted expanded wide over the weekend and took sixth place with $3 million, jumping up from 16th place last weekend.

Further down the list, The Case for Christ seemed to get a little bit of an Easter bump, moving up from tenth to ninth place with $2.7 million with an additional 251 theaters added over the weekend.
