Battle at the Box Office 5/29

The Rock suffered a rare loss at the box office this holiday weekend, getting defeated by the fifth adventure of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales took in $62 million, which only beats Curse of the Black Pearl as far as openings for the franchise but it did have a pretty huge opening overseas with $208 million, putting it at just over $270 million total worldwide.  With Pirates’ opening, Disney has now passed over $1 billion domestic box office for the year and they still have gigantic movies on the way, so their box office domination that started in earnest last year is showing no signs of stopping.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 dropped to second with another $19.9 million, putting it over $333 million domestically and over $783 million worldwide and it’s the second highest grossing movie of the year behind Beauty and the Beast domestically but it’s behind Beauty and The Fate of the Furious internationally, both of which are close to the top of the highest grossing films of all time.

In third, Baywatch was the first flop for The Rock in a while with $18 million, beaten by Guardians in it’s fourth week of release.  It’s an opening that’s on par with early Dwayne Johnson movies like Walking Tall or The Rundown when he wasn’t the juggernaut that he is today.  It’s also way below either of the Jump St. movies that were the clear inspiration but it did top this year’s earlier R rated cheesy TV show reboot, CHIPs.

Alien: Covenant and Everything, Everything rounded out the top 5, with the former suffering a staggering 70% drop from last weekend and taking in $10.5 million.  It’s number one performance last weekend was heavily front loaded to Friday and Saturday, so word of mouth is apparently not great or everyone who was going to see it has already done so.

Further down the chart, Beauty and the Beast took in another $1.5 million, which put it over $500 million domestic, which puts it at #8 on the all time domestic charts and it’s currently 10th on the all time world charts as it’s made over $1.2 billion.
