Battle at the Box Office 7/31

Dunkirk barely managed to hold off The Emoji Movie to take the top spot at the box office for another weekend.

Dunkirk took in another $28.1 million, putting it over $102 million for its two weeks out, making it currently Christopher Nolan’s 6th highest grossing movie behind Interstellar.  It also moved into ninth place overall for all the movies of Summer 2017 ahead of Baby Driver (Wonder Woman is currently the highest grossing movie of the summer, followed by Guardians Vol. 2).

The Emoji Movie took in $25.6 million, which is the sixth best opening for Sony Animation behind the first Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and puts it slightly above Captain Underpants’ opening from earlier in the summer but nowhere near Cars 3 and Despicable Me 3, both of which still underperformed based on expectations.

Girls Trip took third with $20 million, bringing its total to over $65 million for it’s two weeks out and it only dropped about 35% from last weekend.

Atomic Blonde opened in fourth place with $18.5 million, better than the opening of the first John Wick but about half of what John Wick Chapter 2 made in February this year.  It’s the eighth best opening for Charlize Theron between The Huntsman: Winter’s War and A Million Ways to Die in the West.

Spider-Man: Homecoming rounded out the top 5 with another $13.5 million, bringing its total to over $278 million domestic and over $633 million worldwide.  For the MCU, it currently in 9th place overall and has made more than both Amazing movies but is still behind the Sam Raimi trilogy as far as gross.

Further down, Valerian dropped to eighth from fifth place with another $6.8 million and it’s only made just slightly over $30 million so far and it has not yet opened internationally but, like we mentioned last week, Luc Besson created a mad genius web of pre-sales and deals so that the movie will not lose nearly as much money as you would think, despite costing possibly over $200 million to make.  Also down toward the bottom of the top 10, Transformers: The Last Knight is pretty much guaranteed to be the lowest grossing Transformers movie with $568 million, off by $200 million from the next movie up, the first Transformers, which made over $700 million.
