Battle at the Box Office 8/14
The Conjuring series continued its strong box office performance as the prequel to the spin-off Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, took the top spot at the box office.
Annabelle: Creation took in $35 million, which is only $2 million off from the opening of Annabelle and about $5 million off from the two proper Conjuring movies. It’s also way up from director David F. Sandberg’s Lights Out from last summer and Ouija: Origin of Evil, which was a similarly well received prequel to a poorly reviewed predecessor. The movie made about the same amount worldwide with $36 million, bringing its grand total to just over $71 million.
Dunkirk stayed in second with another $11.4 million and it’s made over $150 million for its four weeks out and it’s currently sixth overall for Christopher Nolan films and it’s also sixth for Summer 2017.
The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature had a mediocre third place opening with $8.9 million, the worst ever opening for a film in over 4,000 theaters and nowhere near the opening of the last big animated movie, The Emoji Movie, which made over $24 million it’s opening weekend and it was less than half of what the original Nut Job made in 2014.
The Dark Tower dropped almost 60% from last weekend and only took in another $7.8 million, putting it at $34 million so far for it’s two weeks out and the aforementioned Emoji Movie rounded out the top 5 with another $6.6 million.
Secretly one of the biggest successes of the summer, Girls Trip is closing in on $100 million and will probably make it into the top 10 of the summer and it made another $6.5 million over the weekend.
Just barely making into the top 10 at number 9 was the other new release of the weeknd, the drama The Glass Castle, which only took in $4.8 million.
Further down the list, Ingrid Goes West, starring Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen, had the highest per theater average of the weekend, making just over $47,000 in each of the three theaters it was playing in and it will expand wider in the next few weeks.
