Battle at the Box Office 10/16

Blumhouse had another horror hit over the weekend as Happy Death Day took the top spot at the box office.  Probably also getting a boost as the first horror flavored release of October, Happy Death Day took in $26.5 million, putting it 10th overall for Blumhouse openings, between Paranormal Activity 4 and The Visit but it was not quite up to the level of the studio’s two prior huge hits from earlier this year: Split and Get Out.  It took in about $5 million worldwide as well, bringing it’s total to just over $31 million and, in typical Blumhouse fashion, it’s already made about 6X it’s budget.

Blade Runner 2049 dropped almost 54% from last week’s already disappointing opening and made another $15 million, putting it at just over $60 million for it’s two weeks out, still a very long way away from recouping it’s $150+ million budget.  It has yet to open in both China and Japan, so all hope for future entries in the franchise lay in those countries.

Jackie Chan’s The Foreigner took third place with $12.8 million.  It’s hard to compare a lot of Jackie’s recent live action films since they really only opened in China and were direct to video here but it’s actually, surprisingly, not far off from the recent opening of The Lego Ninjago Movie, which opened with $20 million and it was the fourth best opening ever for the fairly new distributor STX Entertainment.

IT and The Mountain Between Us rounded out the top 5, with the former now becoming the ninth highest grossing film of 2017 worldwide, topping Logan and knocking Transformers: The Last Knight out of the top 10 completely with $630 million.

Further down the list, the weekend’s two biopic dramas did not blow anyone away, although Marshall met expectations with $3 million but Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, trying to leech onto the hype of Wonder Woman, had a terrible opening with only $737,000 in over 1,000 theaters or about $600 per theater all weekend.
