The Pull List: The Art of Overwatch

The 2016 game Overwatch was a gigantic hit and plenty of gamers have poured hours into it. Based on the popularity, 1 out of every 4 gamers have spent some time running around trying to capture bases, escort a bomb or being a simple base camper. But for those looking to take a break from the action (yet still crave some Overwatch goodness), Dark Horse and Blizzard Entertainment have released The Art of Overwatch, an official behind the scene collection of concept art and tales from the development from the Overwatch developers.

Over 300 pages cover the history and early prototypes of characters and levels of the Overwatch universe. Characters are given an overview of their bio, and how they were originally developed. Creating colorful characters and levels is not an easy progress. Concept art goes through many different design changes that dramatically alter the original source. Many game historians may remember that Tracer was originally developed for a unfinished Blizzard project, but did they know that McCree was based on a sketch inspired by the original StarCraft?

Fans that enjoy the vibrant world of Overwatch should check out this book for the large collection of artwork and notes that helped define the aesthetic of the game. Game designers looking to understand the creative progress can also learn a thing or two from Blizzard’s creative team that can help bring simple sketches and turn them into fully 3D rendered creations that people have spent over 500 million in game hours playing.

The Art of Overwatch will be released October 24, 2017.
