Battle at the Box Office 9/10

Despite the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score for the franchise, The Nun blew away all the other movies in the Conjuring Universe, as well as pretty much every other recent horror movie besides IT.

The Nun took in $53.8 million, which is $12 million more than previous best opener The Conjuring and it’s also the second best September opening of all time and the second best R rated horror opening of all time.  The movie also exploded overseas, taking in $77.5 million and was the best horror film opening ever in 19 of the countries it opened in.

Peppermint took second place with $13.4 million, which was on par for what the studio expected and puts it smack dab between the two prior STX action releases, Mile 22 and The Foreigner.  It was about $300,000 below Mile 22’s opening a few weeks ago.  It topped the Death Wish remake from earlier this year, which made just over $13 million for its opening weekend.  It was also just shy of topping the Tom Jane Punisher film, which made $13.8 million back in 2004.

Crazy Rich Asians had its first big drop in its fourth week out, dropping 40% and making another $13.1 million for $135.7 million so far domestically and a total of $164 million globally with its $28.6 international take so far.

The Meg and Searching rounded out the top 5 with the former crossing over $131 million domestic and just short of half a billion worldwide.

The weekend’s other new release opened outside the top 10 as God Bless the Broken Road took 11th with only $1.3 million in 1,272 theaters, making it one of the lowest opening Christian focused movies of 2018.

The weekend’s best per-theater average went to Kusama: Infinity, a documentary about Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.  It made $15,499 in each of its 2 theaters.
