Battle at the Box Office 10/29
The final weekend of October was another strong one for Halloween, as it remained on top for its second week of release. The entire month has been boosted by strong performers like Halloween, Venom and A Star is Born and 2018 is officially the highest grossing October of all time at the box office.
Halloween took in another $32 million, bringing it to $126.6 million for its two weeks out, plus another $45.6 million internationally. In classic Blumhouse fashion, this new Halloween only cost $10 million, so Universal and Blumhouse should be pretty happy so far and it should pretty much guarantee we have not seen the last of Michael Myers.
A Star is Born remained in second and continues to hold extremely strong. It only dropped 25% from last week and took in another $14.1 million, putting it at $148.7 million for its three weeks out. Its also made another $104 million worldwide.
Venom crossed over $500 million worldwide over the weekend and remained in second domestically with another $10.8 million. It’s currently sitting at $187.2 million domestic for three weeks out.
Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween took fourth with $7.5 and Hunter Killer took fifth. The new Gerard Butler movie was #19 as far as openings, sitting between Timeline and PS I Love You and it’s his lowest opening since 2012. It’s about half as much as movies like Geostorm, Den of Thieves and Gods of Egypt made for Butler in the last few years. Geostorm and Gods of Egypt cost way more than Hunter Killer but it’s still not a great opening.
The Hate U Give and Mid90s both continued their strong limited runs, with Hate adding another 72 theaters and staying in sixth place with another $5.1 million, dropping only 32% from last week and Mid90s moving into the top 10 at tenth place with $3 million as moved into over 1,200 theaters.
The other two new releases of the weekend were both in less than 1,000 screens. Johnny English Strikes Again took in $1.6 million but overseas, especially in it’s native UK, the movie has already made over $100 million and it’s the highest grossing movie in the Johnny English trilogy. Indivisible, the latest faith-based drama from PureFlix, took in $1.5 million in 830 theaters, putting it between Samson and Hillsong for the Christian production company.
There was also some possibly good news for The Predator, as it opened in China over the weekend and took in $20 million and took the top spot for that country’s box office. It’s just under $150 million worldwide and is the second highest grossing film in the franchise worldwide behind Alien vs Predator.
The best Per Theater performance went to Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria, which took in $89,903 in each of the two theaters it was playing in.
