Battle at the Box Office 11/5

Bohemian Rhapsody took over the top spot at the box office for the first weekend of November, followed by the other two new releases in second and third.

Bohemian Rhapsody took in $50 million, the second-best opening ever for the musical biopic genre.  It was also $6 million higher than A Star is Born’s opening a few weeks ago.  The movie has also made $94 million internationally, bringing its grand total to $144 million.  It’s gotten an “A” Cinemascore rating from audiences which seems to indicate it will probably remain strong in the next few weeks.

The Nutcracker and The Four Realms took second place with $20 million, which is on the low end of what Disney was expecting.  It’s lower than John Carter, The Lone Ranger and A Wrinkle in Time, all of which were considered financial disappointments, if not outright bombs.  It’s also sitting between The Santa Clause 2 and 3 for Disney Christmas movies.  The movie has taken in $39 million internationally, with $12 million coming from China.

Nobody’s Fool opened in third place with $14 million, which is the third lowest opening ever for Tyler Perry, only beating Daddy’s Little Girl and The Single Moms Club.  It’s less than half of what Tiffany Haddish’s star-making turn in Girls Trip made last year and it’s the lowest of the three major releases she’s appeared in this year.

A Star is Born and Halloween rounded out the top 5 with the former, even with seemingly direct competition from Bohemian Rhapsody, still only dropped 20% from last weekend with another $11.1 million, bringing it to over $165.6 million.  Halloween dropped 65% from last week, probably because it’s titular holiday passed by during the week, and made another $11 million, bringing it to over $150.4 million.

The Per Theater average went to Boy Erased, the latest drama directed by Joel Edgerton, which took in $44,000 in each of the five theaters it debuted in.
