Battle at the Box Office 3/4

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World remained on top of the box office but just barely held off the power of Madea in what may be the final film in the franchise.

The Hidden World made another $30 million, outpacing both of its predecessors in the same time period but it dropped slightly more than the first movie with 45% compared to How to Train Your Dragon’s 33% drop from its opening.  The movie has made over $378 million total worldwide and is currently 18th on the list of worldwide grosses for Dreamworks (Shrek 2 is the king in case you were wondering).

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral took second with $27 million.  It’s the fourth highest opening for the Madea franchise, behind Goes to Jail, Family Reunion and the first Madea Halloween and it’s the fifth highest overall opening for Tyler Perry with Why Did I Get Married Too? Sneaking in amongst the three aforementioned Madea movies.

Alita: Battle Angel dropped to third with another $7 million, bringing it to $72.2 million domestic and over $350 million worldwide, most of that coming from China and other Asian markets.  Most estimates put $500 million as the mark Alita will have to hit worldwide for it to break even, given it’s $170 million+ budget.

The Lego Movie 2 brought in another $6.6 million, bringing it to $91.6 million domestic and $153 million worldwide but it’s a staggering $118 million behind what the first movie had made up to this point domestically and $57 million behind what Lego Batman had made.

Boosted by its Best Picture win, Green Book launched back up into the top 5 with $4.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $75.9 million.  A Star is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody and Into the Spider-Verse all also had post-Oscars expansions but none of them managed to get back into the top 10 like Green Book.

The other new release of the weekend, Greta, debuted in 8th place with $4.5 million.  That’s around most estimates but it also got a C- Cinemascore, so word of mouth won’t be great and it will probably drop off pretty quickly.

The best Per Screen average went to the latest from Gaspar Noe, Climax, which took in $24,311 on each of the 5 screens it debuted on.
