Battle at the Box Office 4/22

In the holiday weekend before shit gets cray-cray with Avengers: Endgame, the latest horror entry from Warner Brothers took the top spot.

The Curse of La Llorona brought in $26.5 million over Easter weekend.  WB has been playing coy about whether it’s actually properly in The Conjuring universe (there’s a character from Annabelle in it) but if it is, in fact, a part of that franchise, it was the lowest opening for the franchise, about $10 million behind what Annabelle: Creation made in its opening.  For R rated horror, it was the 35th best opening of all time between Resident Evil: Afterlife and Hollow Man. Worldwide, La Llorona made a combined $56 million with La Llorona’s home of Mexico leading with $5.3 million.

Shazam dropped to #2 with another $17.3 million and only dropped 29% from last weekend. Its made over $121 million domestic and over $322.8 million worldwide.

Christian focused Breakthrough took third place with $11.1 million for the weekend and $14.6 million total since it opened on Wednesday last week. It’s well above last month’s Unplanned and reviews were much higher than a typical Christian/faith-based release from a company like Pure Flix, who put out the aforementioned Unplanned (Breakthrough was a Fox joint).

Captain Marvel and Little rounded out the top 5 with the former actually performing slightly higher than last weekend, most likely as people were revisiting it prior to this weekend’s Endgame.

Outside the top 10, Disneynature’s Penguins debuted in 12th place with $2.3 million for the weekend and $3.3 million total as it came out on Wednesday last week.  It’s by far the lowest opening for the franchise with the highest being 2012’s Chimpanzee, which made $10.6 million.

The Per Theater average went to Under the Silver Lake, which made $20,079 in both of the theaters it debuted in.  The movie is a comedy crime drama that stars Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough.
