Battle at the Box Office 6/3

Godzilla topped the top of the box office as we rolled into June over the weekend, but it wasn’t a particularly strong performance from the King of Monsters.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters took in $49 million over the weekend, which is a massive drop-off from 2014’s reboot that made over $93 million it’s opening weekend.  King of the Monsters’ haul is also just barely above what Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla made in 1998, which was just over $44 million but, if you adjust for inflation, that would actually be over $84 million in today’s dollars.  It’s also below Kong: Skull Island, which made over $61 million it’s opening weekend but it is more than either Pacific Rim movie made in their openings. Worldwide, Godzilla made $130 million, $70 million of that from China, for a grand total opening of just over $179 million.

Aladdin dropped to second place with a 53% drop from last weekend, taking in another $42.3 million.  It has made over $185 million domestically and is closing in on half a billion worldwide.

Rocketman took in $25 million for third place in its opening weekend.  It’s the fourth best opening ever for a musical biopic, although it’s half as much as Bohemian Rhapsody made in its opening weekend last year.  Rocketman took in $31 million internationally for a worldwide total so far of $56.2 million.

Ma and John Wick Chapter 3 rounded out the top 5 with the former having a now typical Blumhouse opening of 3x it’s budget in the first weekend, making $18 million while costing $5 million.  It was the fifth best opening for star Octavia Spencer and the 19th best opening for Blumhouse between Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and Sinister.

The battle between Avengers: Endgame and Avatar also continued over the weekend as Endgame is now only $75 million away from claiming the top spot at the global box office and becoming the highest grossing film of all time.

Godzilla also took the Per Theater average, making $11,934 in each of the 4,108 theaters it debuted in.
