The Pull List – Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-tep #4

Graceland gets turned into a hunk of burning love when Ash and Bubba Ho-Tep crash land Elvis’ private jet. The time warping mummy brings Ash to the present while Elvis is thrown back into the 70s. Bubba Ho-Tep summons his own twisted version of Elvis, the long-dead impersonator that replaced the real Elvis in the past. Now Ash has to battle a deadite fake Elvis and stop Bubba Ho-Tep from reaching his full power.

It’s a non-stop action worthy for hailing at a king in this epic finale. Writer Scott Duvall gives this series a proper send-off with slapstick dialogue and a returning character from the Bubba Ho-Tep film. Letting Ash face off against this nightmare version of his idol is a fun way to get Ash ready for the main fight. Duvall’s efforts to build up the story pays off for showdown to see who is really the last king standing.

Artist Vincenzo Federici and colorist Michele Monte give the action sequences an amazing pace, with lots of whimsical violence. Federici artwork is solid. He captures the ionic images of smug expressions of Ash while showing off the decaying flesh from the undead. Ash not only has to face off against two opponents, but also survive the raging fires within Graceland. Monte uses a mix of unconventional colors, like purple and orange to make the scenes pop against the flaming background.

Fans of Evil Dead, Bubba Ho-Tep, and all things Bruce Campbell, will see this series as a great love letter spilled onto comic panels. Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep is a fun reading experience that shows the best of both characters and neatly wraps up before it can stall. The four issues explored Ash and Elvis while reinforcing Bubba Ho-Tep’s danger. The story took bits of everything that the movies established and made it own fun spin. If there is ever a follow-up, it might be time for My Name is Bruce to join in on the fun.

Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-tep #4 will be on sale on June 5h, 2019.
