Battle at the Box Office 7/8

Spider-Man stepped up in the wake of Endgame, delivering a record-shattering opening over the holiday weekend.

Opening on Tuesday last week, Far From Home made a total of $185 million but $92.6 for the normal three day weekend.  The three day weekend is the 16th highest opening for the MCU but if you take its entire opening, it’s the sixth highest opening in the franchise.  It was also the highest Tuesday opening of all time and the highest six-day opening of all time.  Internationally, the movie made another $392 million, for a grand total so far of $577 million.

Toy Story 4 dropped to second place with another $33.8 million, bringing it to over $306 million domestically and just shy of $652 million worldwide.  It’s currently the ninth highest grossing Pixar movie of all time worldwide and the sixth highest domestic.

Yesterday stayed in third place with another $10 million, bringing it to $36 million for two weeks out.

Annabelle Comes Home and Aladdin rounded out the top 5, with the latter at over $921 million worldwide.

Midsommar, the weekend’s other new release, took in $6.3 million for the three day weekend and $10.9 million total since it opened on Wednesday last week.  That’s about half as much as Hereditary opened to last year but the reception was slightly better, getting a C+ Cinemascore as compared to the D that Hereditary got. It was the third highest opening ever for A24 but only 5 of their films have opened in over 1,000 theaters.

Further down the list, Avengers: Endgame is continuing to drag itself toward Avatar’s recording, now only about $10 million short of taking the all-time box office.

Spider-Man: Far From Home also took the Per Theater average, making $19,978 in each of the 4,634 theaters it played in.
