The Pull List – Vampirella #1

Vampirella celebrates her 50th anniversary in style with a return to the comic pages in her own series from Dynamite. The vampiric warrior from the planet Drakulon traveled to Earth many years ago in search of blood. Learning to empathize with the humans, Vampirella takes an oath to protect her new planet. Peacefully living among humans, she hunts for nefarious evils that wish to control the Earth. This new series follows Vampirella on her latest adventure where one mistake has grave consequences.

Issue one finds Vampirella in the wreckage of an airplane. Hours before, Vampirella was on aboard a flight that was interrupted by one of her foes, Von Kreist. A cruel immortal being, Von Kreist.has come to deliver an explosive message to Vampirella. The airplane in the sky begins a fast descent downward and there is nothing the hero can do. Feeling the guilt of many innocents lives lost, Vampirella reevaluates her purpose on Earth.

Christopher Priest brings red slingshot bikini-clad heroine out from the shadows and into the modern era. The writing is witty and self-aware, joking about the supernatural elements that Vampirella fans have come to enjoy. The first issue gives a small preview of Vampirella world, barely touching the backstory to introduce new fans to the series. However, the pacing makes some assurances to get new readers caught up while tackling Vampirella’s newest threat.

Ergun Gunduz’s great artwork helps to capture all the chaotic scenes of a falling airplane. iI’s a really intense moment with crazy airborne fighting, debris scattered around and the airplane ripping itself apart. Of course, it won’t be a Vampirella story without some blood and guts. Gunduz’s lets Vampirella show off wings to guide fly in the air in a full panel. The shot is pretty cool and is awesome fanfare to the character.

Vampirella will bring old friends and foes, and a challenge that will have Vampirella asking herself some big questions. Comic fans that want to know the more about one of comics alluring heroes from the past 50 years should pick up the first issue to learn all about this vampiric hero.

Vampirella #1 will be on sale on July 17th, 2019.
