Battle at the Box Office 8/26

Gerard Butler topped the box office with the third entry in the *Blank* Has Fallen franchise while Hobbs & Shaw exploded in China.

Angel Has Fallen took in $21.3 million over the weekend which, while the lowest opening of the trilogy, it was the first movie in the trilogy to debut at #1.  Olympus and London were both up against strong animated competition and both opened in second place on the weekends they opened.  It’s the 9th best opening for Gerard Butler between London Has Fallen and Law Abiding Citizen.

Good Boys dropped to second place with another $11.8 million, dropping around 45% from last weekend’s opening.  It’s made about $42 million so far for two weeks out.

Overcomer took third place with a higher than expected $8.2 million.  The faith-based movie was the third-best opening for director/star/writer Alex Kendrick and the 18th best opening in the Christian category, sitting between When the Game Stands Tall and The Nativity Story.

The Lion King and Hobbs & Shaw rounded out the top 5, with the former topping over $1.5 billion worldwide.  Hobbs & Shaw opened in China and had a massive weekend, taking in $102 million.  That’s the second-best Chinese opening for the Fast & Furious series behind The Fate of the Furious and the biggest August opening ever in China.  With that opening, Hobbs & Shaw now has just over $588 million worldwide.

Ready or Not opened in sixth place with $7.5 million.  Compared to other recent original horror movies, it’s slightly above the opening of Overlord last year and behind The Forest from 2016.  It’s the 12th best opening for Fox Searchlight between Just Wright and Our Family Wedding. It actually came out on Wednesday last week, so it has a total so far of $11 million.

Further down the list, Shia LaBeouf’s The Peanut Butter Falcon expanded to 991 theaters and took in $3 million, jumping up from 20th to 12th.

The Per Theater average went to Brittany Runs a Marathon, an indie comedy starring Jillian Bell, made $36,142 in each of the 5 theaters it opened in.
