Battle at the Box Office 2/24

Sonic stayed on top for a second week in a row, managing to hold off Harrison Ford and CG dog.

Sonic took in another $26.2, dropping 55% from last weekend’s opening but it’s still exceeding all expectations from Paramount.  The movie has made over $106 million domestic for two weeks out, which is more than Paramount thought it would make for its entire run and it also has over $202 million worldwide.

The Call of the Wild opened to $24.8 million, which would have been a great opening if the movie didn’t cost over $125 million, possibly because of all the CG required to make Harrison Ford’s canine co-star Buck.  It also seems to be skewing older than a normal family movie, which could contribute to some legs in the next few weeks and it also got fairly good word of mouth.  It has a worldwide total of just over $40 million worldwide.

Birds of Prey dropped to third, falling 60% from last weekend.  It took in another $6.8 million and it has over $173.5 million worldwide.  It’s still not completely clear what its ultimate fate will be, whether it will break even, lose money or make a tiny bit of profit.

Bad Boys for Life stayed in the top 5 in fourth place with another $5.84 million.  It has over $391 million worldwide and is currently the highest-grossing film of 2020 domestically and worldwide.

Brahms: The Boy II opened to fifth place with $5.82 million.  That is around half as much as the original The Boy opened to back in 2016 and it’s even below recent horror flops like The Turning and Gretel & Hansel.  It has just over $8 million worldwide.

Further down the list, Fantasy Island and The Photograph but had significant drops from last weekend.  Fantasy Island fell 65% and fell to sixth place and The Photograph dropped a horrendous 77% to barely stay in the top ten at tenth place.

Emma took the Per Theater average with $46,896 in each of the 5 theaters it played in over the weekend.
