• Full Cast and Plot revealed for “Riddick”: It’s been eight years since “The Chronicles of Riddick” came out and Vin Diesel and director David Twohy have been fighting for funding for a third movie in the franchise and they were finally able to get it on track this year.  The cast and plot was revealed this week and it sounds more in line with Pitch Black, which is a good thing, and follows Riddick as he’s left for a dead on a planet full of deadly alien predators and must fight his way to an emergency beacon so he has a chance to be rescued by a shipful of mercenaries.  Karl Urban, Jordi Molla, Katee Sackhoff, Matt Nable and Bokheem Woodbine co-star.
• Insidious 2 in the works: Insidious was one of the surprise horror hits of 2010 and made a crapload of money for a $1.5 million budget.  Insidious 2 is now in the works with director James Wan back along with screenwriter Leigh Whannell.  No word if Patrick Wilson or Rose Byrne will return or what the movie will be about.
• Adam Sandler starring in Candy Land: In what I think is one of the signs of the apocalypse, Adam Sandler will be starring in the adaptation of the board game Candy Land for Columbia Pictures.  There’s no mention about what the plot will be but it will probably follow a group of kids making their way through the various candy themed areas of Candy Land with Sandler as their guide.
• Robocop remake being rewritten by Gran Torino writer: After Darren Aronofsky left the project, the remake of Robocop went a little dormant but it’s apparently being rewritten by Nick Schenk, who wrote the screenplay for Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino.  Jose Padilha, director of Elite Squad, is signed on to direct.
• Stretch Armstrong movie changes studios, drops Taylor Lautner: Universal had a bunch of Hasbro properties in various states of production but one of them, Stretch Armstrong, has moved to Relativity Media and Taylor Lautner and director Rob Letterman are both off the project.
• Joe Carnahan directing and writing Death Wish remake:  Joe Carnahan, currently riding high with The Grey, is signed on to direct and write a remake of the Charles Bronson classic, Death Wish.  Frank Grillo, who has had great supporting roles in the aforementiond The Grey and also last year’s Warrior, is set to star and the movie will be set in a Collateral/Drive style Los Angeles.
• Matthew Vaughn signed on for X-Men First Class sequel:  I’m on board for anything they do.

Liam Neeson continues to cement himself as an action star with his latest movie, The Grey, but there’s a lot more going on in it than you probably expect from the “Liam Neeson punches wolves” trailers.

Neeson stars as Ottway, a survival expert/hunter who works perimeter security for an oil drilling station in remote Alaska.  He’s suffered some sort of personal trauma and is basically on the verge of suicide as the movie opens but he quickly has to put everything aside when he and a small group of oil workers survive a horrific plane crash on their way back to civilization.  As if the freezing cold and remoteness of their crash weren’t bad enough, the men have seemingly crashed into the middle of wolf territory, as a pack of vicious wolves starts stalking and killing the men.

Neeson is at his absolute best in The Grey, giving both emotional depth and bad assness to the character of Ottway.  He effortlessly goes from staring down the wolf pack to comforting a man who is about to die.   No matter what situation comes up, Ottway keeps a level head and tries, and unfortunately usually fails, to drag the other men along with him to safety.  I also loved his resourcefulness whether he’s tying himself in to his airplane seat with three seatbelts to creating “wolf sticks” with some found shotgun shells and homemade spears.  If I was lost in the Alaskan wilderness, I would follow Ottway in a heartbeat.  The rest of the cast is a bunch of extremely solid character actors with the standout probably being Frank Grillo as Diaz, who starts out as what seems to be the typical asshole character but slowly grows and accepts his situation until he comes to his heartbreaking end. All of the characters are fleshed out extremely well and through things like fireside conversations, you start to care about them, which makes their eventual deaths to wolves, etc. that much more effecting.

Joe Carnahan does a great job of relating how dire the survivors situation is and how desolate a region they are in.  There are tons of shots of the wintry landscape that feel more and more hopeless as the movie goes on.  Not to say that the movie isn’t exciting as well, especially as there’s the almost constant threat of the wolf pack and there’s numerous times where you will probably jump out of your seat as a wolf comes out of nowhere to snatch away another survivor.  The plane crash is also one of the best I’ve seen.  Besides the wolves, the guys also have to fight the elements and just as many guys succumb to the freezing cold and nature as to wolves ripping their throats out.  The big scene that most people are probably waiting for, Liam Neeson taping bottles to his knuckles and taking on one of the wolves, is definitely not what you are expecting it to be and, *SPOILER* you don’t actually get to see Neeson go one on one with the wolf but the build up to that scene is so great emotionally that it would probably cheapen everything else, even though it would probably be awesome in the short run.

Just as I hoped, The Grey is the first great movie of the year, even though it’s not the balls to the action movie you might be expecting.  It is a fantastic survival movie with an amazing Liam Neeson in the lead and just goes to show the versatility of Joe Carnahan as the The Grey is a complete 18o from his last movie, the awesomely insane A-Team movie.  It’s definitely highly recommended and sets a high mark for the other movies of the year to match.

February isn’t the most stellar time for movies but it looks there could be a couple of solid movies this month, including Denzel Washinton in full bad ass mode in Safe House and the first major superhero movie with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.  Check out all of the movies coming out this month below.

• Chronicle- A found footage take on the superhero genre, Chronicle follows a group of three friends who mysteriously gain super powers and get in into random shenanigans until one of the group starts to get corrupted by the power and starts to go out of control.
• Big Miracle- Based on a true story, Drew Barrymore leads an effort to save a group of stranded whales in Barrow, Alaska after their path to the ocean is frozen over.
• The Woman in Black- Daniel Radcliffe makes his first attempt to escape the shadow of Harry Potter in the Victorian era horror movie, The Woman in Black, where Radcliffe plays a lawyer who goes to finalize the sale of a house of one of his recently deceased clients, only to find it haunted by an evil spirit.

February 10

• Safe House- Denzel Washington stars as Tobin Frost, the CIA’s most wanted criminal who CIA agent Ryan Reynolds must reluctantly team up with when the CIA safe house they are holding at is attacked.
• Journey 2: The Mysterious Island- The Rock+terrible first movie= hit?  Hopefully it will work this summer with GI Joe: Retaliation and the people behind the Journey franchise(?) hope it will work on this sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D as The Rock and Nick Hutcherson drag Vanessa Hudgens and Luis Guizman to the titular island in search of Michael Caine and find crazy creatures, Atlantis and other Jules Verne inspired antics.
• Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace 3D-  The Star Wars saga begins it’s six year return to theaters in 3D as easily the most hated movie in the franchise, The Phantom Menace, gets re-released.  It might be worth it to sneak in and watch the last 20 minutes in 3D.
• The Vow- Shockingly not based on a Nicolas Sparks novel, The Vow finds Channing Tatum trying to help Rachel McAdams remember their relationship after she loses her memory in a car crash.

February 17

• Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance- Hopefully able to erase the taste of the mediocre original Ghost Rider movie, Spirit of Vengeance sees Nicolas Cage returning as Johnny Blaze and Crank directors Neveldine & Taylor behind the camera.
• The Secret World of Arietty- Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated feature is a new take on The Borrowers as a young boy discovers a family of little people living in the walls of his house.
• This Means War (February 14th)- Chris Pine and Tom Hardy star as CIA agents and best friends who become romantic rivals when they realize they both have been dating the same girl (Reese Witherspoon) and use the full arsenal of the CIA to sabotage each other.

February 24th

• Act of Valor- Real Navy SEALs star in this action movie as an elite SEAL team uncovers a terrorist plot after they are sent in to rescue a kidnapped CIA agent.
• Gone- Amanda Seyfried plays a kidnap victim who is convinced the man who kidnapped her has returned and kidnapped her sister, but no one believes her.
• Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds- The annual Tyler Perry movie, this one finds a man on the verge of his marriage developing feelings for a single mother.
• Wanderlust- The latest comedy from David Wain stars Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd as a married couple who are forced to leave their fast paced NYC business careers and find themselves on a rural commune.

This edition of The Lone Gunmen Total Recall features one of the episodes I remembered the most about and features a great guest star appearance by Stephen Tobolowsky.

The episode kicks of with Tobolowsky’s character coming home from work and going about his pre-bed ritual of watching TV, having a beer and going to the bathroom but unbeknownst to him, another man comes home and does the exact same routine, with the two men just barely missing seeing each other until finally they realize what’s going on when they accidentally get into bed with each other.  The other man and his wife are horrified by Tobolowsky (who we’ll soon learn is named Adam Burgess) but he accuses them of being in his house.

Byers and Jimmy go to meet Adam soon afterwards and they find out that he’s come with a crazy conspiracy about being from an alternate reality that aliens abducted him from and brought him to our reality, since his entire life has seemingly been stolen from him.  He offers up a tub of weird blue goo as proof and Byers quickly dismisses him as a loon but Jimmy notices a weird connector surgical implanted in Adam’s neck that makes Byers give him a second look.

Back at the Gunmen HQ, Frohike and Langly are skeptical when they find out the goo is udder cream and he’s still talking about aliens and alternate realities but Byers convinces them to perform an MRI to see what the deal with the connector is.  Using “Bessie”, Frohike’s homemade MRI machine, they find out that the connector is connected to a series of wires hooked in to various parts of Adam’s brain.  This definitely peaks the Gunmen’s interest so they head off with Adam to investigate his supposed house.  Adam seems to have intimate knowledge of the neighborhood and it’s resident’s routine which makes Byers hypothesize that Adam may have possibly been fed a feed of the house through hidden cameras, much like how people are able to become intimately familiar with TV locations.  Byers, Jimmy, Langley and Adam break into Adam’s “house” to search for hidden cameras while Frohike kills the power and stand guard outside.  Inside, the guys use handheld sensors to try and find any electronics and mark suspicious locations.  Adam gets impatient and uses a handheld saw to start cutting into the walls, eventually collapsing the entire wall of the kitchen, right in front of a pair of cops that have been called by nosy neighbor Rosey.  The guys then have to spend the night in jail but are sprung by Yves paying their bail.

Yves joins the guys in investigating Adam’s case and they get a lead when Adam flies into a rage when seeing a commercial for Maniac Marvin’s Electronics.  The guys got a hint of some sort of inner anger in jail when Adam flipped out on Langley and the guys, sans Frohike and Yves, head to Marvin’s store to question him.  Marvin claims he’s never seen Adam before but he has a picture of Adam with a dwarf woman hidden on his desk.  Outside, Adam flies into a rage again when he sees a standee of Marvin with a pair of midget wrestlers and slams Langley against the front window.  While the others are at Marvin’s, Yves and Frohike are paid a visit by a woman named Lois who claims to be Adam’s wife but is actually the head scientist behind a drastic behavior modification therapy.   Back at the HQ, Adam again goes crazy when he confuses Frohike for a midget wrestler named The Great Santini.  Yves finds out that Santini has a daughter named Sadie and the gang goes to pay her a visit.  It turns out that Sadie and Marvin are seeing each other and Sadie is Adam’s wife.  Adam’s real name is Charlie Muckle and he was an alcoholic, rageaholic, criminal who volunteered for Dr. Lois’ crazy therapy instead of going to jail for putting one of Marvin’s eyes out.  The treatment consisted of Charlie getting a virtual world fed into the connector on his neck and living the perfect life of Adam Burgess with Dr. Lois as his wife.  Confronted with how messed up his old life was, Adam/Charlie agrees to get plugged back into the virtual reality.

The guys are excited by having an actual, interesting story to write about for their next addition but Jimmy is disappointed by the ending of the story so he convinces the guys to help him reunite Charlie with Sadie.  The guys find that the hidden cameras at the site of Charlie’s virtual house are actually on the utility poles outside and they tap in and are able to stand in the front yard and talk to Charlie and are able to convince him that the virtual life is a sham and will never be as fulfilling as an actual life and they manage to get him to the wedding of Sadie and Marvin in time to stop it and get back together with Sadie.

Bruce Willis and Henry Cavill star as father and son in the upcoming action thriller, The Cold Light of Day.  Cavill stars as a Wall Street trader who is on vacation with his family in Madrid.  He goes into town for supplies and comes back to the family’s boat to find them all gone and signs of foul play all over.  He soon learns that his father is actually a CIA agent and his family was kidnapped by people who believe that Bruce Willis’ character stole a valuable briefcase.  Sigourney Weaver co-stars as a fellow CIA agent who may or not be corrupt.  It seems very similar to Abducted with Taylor Lautner (Sigourney Weaver even co-starred in that movie) but hopefully with actors who can actually, you know, act, that it will be a decent action movie.  Check out the trailer below and the movie is out in April.

There are great soundtracks, good soundtracks and then there’s soundtracks like 1998′s soundtrack for Roland Emmerich’s infamous and overhyped Godzilla.  Featuring mostly alternative rock from the likes of The Wallflowers, Foo Fighters, Fuel and Rage Against the Machine, most of the songs are not totally offensive but extremely forgettable but one song from the Godzilla soundtrack that has passed into infamy is P. Diddy’s “Come With Me”, which desecrates the Led Zepplin classic “Kashmir”, with the full consent of Jimmy Page.  The music video for the song is seven minutes of insanity as P. Diddy indulges in such things as free falling into Times Square and performing with a full orchestra with minimal interaction with the star of the movie (Godzilla seemingly destroys Diddy’s apartment early in the video).  If you still want to check it out, you can watch the video below.

God Bless America is the latest, certain to be controversial, movie from Bobcat Goldthwait that indulges a lot of people’s secret desire to murder all the annoying assholes of pop culture, from the Kardashians to the Westboro Baptist Church to the horrible teens of My Super Sweet 16 and all the other MTV shit.  Joel Murray (Freddy Rumsen from Mad Men) stars as Frank, a man who is diagnosed with untreatable cancer and decides, since he’s going to die anyway, he might as well take down all the aforementioned horrible people with him.  He picks up a teenage girl as his sidekick and the two go on a rampage across America.  I appreciate the sentiment of the movie but it feels like an Uwe Boll movie, Postal in particular, and seems like it’s using shock as punchlines instead of actual jokes.  There’s probably going to be less horribly offensive 9/11 jokes in God Bless America.  The movie will be On Demand in April and in select theaters in May and you can check out the red band trailer below.

Liam Neeson continues his domination of the early parts of the year by having another number one action movie in The Grey this weekend, following on previous number ones Taken and Unknown.  The Grey took in a solid $19.6 million, a little bit under those other Neeson action flicks but they both also came from bigger studios.  Underworld: Awakening fell by 51% from it’s number one weekend last week but still took second place with another $12.4 million.  One for the Money performed above expectations, which granted were extremely low, with a gross of $11.5 million.  It probably got a boost from it’s Groupon promotion where you could get a ticket for $6.  Red Tails and Man on a Ledge rounded out the top 5 with Man on a Ledge having a pretty terrible opening, getting beat by previous Sam Worthington movie The Debt, which made $9.9 million it’s opening weekend.  In other box office news, The Descendants returned to over 1,000 theaters over the weekend and rocketed back into the top ten, going from 16th last week to eighth this week.  Going in the opposite direction, Haywire and Contraband both fell drastically from previous weeks with the former barely staying in the top ten.

5. Robert Muldoon in Jurassic Park

Supposed Expert in: Dinosaurs

I’m willing to cut Muldoon (Bob Peck) some slack because the animal he’s asked to be an expert in hasn’t existed on the planet Earth for 65 million years but he still fails spectacularly when called upon to act.  Throughout the entirety of Jurassic Park, Muldoon is built up as a bad ass hunter, previously working on John Hammond’s Kenyan game park and an expert in predators like cheetahs and lions but is called upon to be the game warden of the various dinosaur species Ingen has brought back to life.  Muldoon does manage to outrun the T-Rex in a jeep but we were all just waiting to see Muldoon get down to his element and take on the dinosaurs 1 on 1.  To Muldoon’s credit, he seems to have massive respect for the various dinosaurs, most notably the Raptors, but he is still easily outsmarted by the Raptor trio with a simple bait and switch.

4. Charles Remington in The Ghost and The Darkness

Supposed Expert in: Lions

As played by Michael Douglas, Charles Remington is a Victorian era lion hunter who is called in by British military engineer John Henry Patterson to help kill a pair of rogue lions (the titular Ghost and Darkness) who are stalling the building of a railroad through Africa.  Remington arrives with a group of Massai warriors, who immediately leave after the first confrontation with the lions.  Remington stays and comes up with a plan to lure the lions to an old hospital by covering it with blood and meat but the lions instead go to the recently build new hospital and murder a bunch of patients and more of the railroad workers.  Remington does manage to kill one of the lions but the other ninjas into camp later that night and drags Remington off to kill him, leaving Val Kilmer to kill the remaining lion by himself.

3. Paul Sarone in Anaconda

Supposed Expert in: Snakes

Besides being a shitty snake expert, Paul Sarone (as played by Jon Voight) is also just a huge dick, hijacking a documentary film crew on his mad quest to capture a record breakingly huge green anaconda.  Sarone’s various attempt to capture the anaconda only result in most of the film crew getting killed and Sarone even uses the surviving crew as bait by covering them in monkey blood but is finally killed by the anaconda himself as it eats him whole and then, to add insult to injury, vomits him back up.

2. Dr. James Atherton in Arachnaphobia

Supposed Expert in: Spiders

Dr. Atherton’s failure almost resulted in a deadly new species of spider invading all of America and not just the small town they start out in.  Dr. Atherton starts out by doing the equivalent of throwing dynamite into a lake by going into the Venezuelan rainforest and smoke bombing the creatures of a massive sinkhole and collecting the falling, knocked out, creatures, one of which is an aggressive, venomous spider.  The captured spider is only a drone but the “general” spider hitches a ride in one of Atherton’s assistant’s backpacks, kills him and then catches a ride back to America, where it mates with a common house spider and a brood of genetic monsters are unleashed on the small town of Canaima, killing a bunch of the residents.  Atherton is called in by archanophobic town doctor, Ross Jennings, to figure out how to stop the spiders and Atherton tracks down the site of the general’s first nest but is quickly killed by getting bit on the arm, leaving Dr. Jennings and bumbling town exterminator, Delbert McClintock, to eliminate the rest of the spiders.

1. Quint in Jaws

Supposed Expert in: Jaws

The amount of hype and build up around Quint (Robert Shaw) in Jaws makes his eventual horrific murder by the titular shark all the more ridiculous.  Quint starts the hype machine going by interrupting a town meeting about what to do about the rogue shark by saying that he’s hunted sharks before and even gives the town options about how they want the carcass.  Quint, along with Sheriff Brody and scientific shark expert Matt Hooper, head out Quint’s boat, the Orca, to hunt down Jaws and Quint reveals that he has an hatred of sharks after surviving in shark infested waters in World War II when his ship was sunk.  Jaws manages to damage the Orca various times and Quint helps by destroying the only radio on board.  Eventually Jaws manages to flop himself on board and eat Quint in the most horrible way possible, leaving Sheriff Brody, who is terrified of both sharks and the ocean, to blow up Jaws with a well timed shot to a scuba tank.

There was a brief teaser trailer for Lockout, the latest from Luc Besson’s company Europa, a couple months ago but now there’s a full trailer and consider me infinitely more excited.  Guy Pearce stars as Snow, a criminal who is given a chance at freedom if he goes on a mission to rescue the President’s daughter from a maximum security prison that has been taken over by the inmates.  The big catch is that the prison is a space station orbiting the Earth.  I’m hearing a lot of people making comparisons to Escape from New York and Guy Pearce to Kurt Russell and I can definitely see it along with Europa’s most recent hit, Taken.  I’m a fan of Guy Pearce and he looks like he’s gonna be a great, wise ass action hero in this.  Check out the trailer below and the movie is out in April.
