Alien: Covenant managed to just barely beat Guardians Vol. 2 at the box office but it’s opening was way down from Prometheus’ opening back in 2012.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 kicked off Summer 2017 in huge fashion with the biggest sequel improvement ever for the MCU with over $145 million and the 2nd best domestic opening of the year.
Fate of the Furious easily held onto the top spot at the box office as it closed in on $1 billion worldwide while none of the new releases even made it into the top 5.
Everyone expected Fate of the Furious to be huge but it blew away all expectations with the highest global opening of all time, defeating Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Controversial Ghost in the Shell flopped this weekend while Dreamworks’ The Boss Baby emerged as the new box office champ, unseating Beauty and the Beast.
Beauty and the Beast remained strong with the fourth best 2nd weekend in history while Logan has crossed over half a billion worldwide and Power Rangers had a stronger debut than anticipated.
Beauty and the Beast shattered records with a stunning $170 million opening, the largest PG opening of all time and the seventh highest ever opening of all time.
It’s classic counter-programming this weekend as Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast takes on the bloody thriller The Belko Experiment.
