• Will and Jaden Smith starring in Shymalan Sci Fi movie: The father and son team will star in a still untitled sci fi movie written by M. Night and Gary Whitta about a boy who has to survive an abandoned planet after the space ship carrying him and his father crash lands.  At this point, everything Shymalan touches turns to shit so no expectations for this one.
• Mortal Kombat web series launches next week: Next Tuesday on Machinima.com, the first episode of the new Mortal Kombat web series, based on that awesome short from a few months back, will launch.
• Attack the Block coming to the US via Sony: The British sci fi film starring Nick Frost about a group of inner city kids who are the only defense when an alien invasion happens is going to be coming stateside courtesy of Sony.
• Bill and Ted 3 script is six weeks away: During an interview for Henry’s Crime, Keanu Reeves mentioned that writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon were about six weeks from delivering a draft for Bill and Ted 3.  He mentioned that the story would involve a middle aged Bill and Ted dealing with the fact that their first hit song didn’t change the world as predicted.
• Black Dynamite Cartoon officially announced for next year: Adult Swim announced that the Black Dynamite cartoon will premiere next spring.  The show will feature all the actors from the movie doing voice work and will be directed by The Boondocks’ Carl Jones and animated by Titmouse, who have done Metalocalypse, Super Jail and Afro Samurai.
• Jam Packed Office Season Finale: NBC is pulling out all the stops for The Office’s season finale this year.  We already knew that Will Ferrell would be taking over the office for a few episode but for the season finale this year Will Arnett, Ray Romano, Ricky Gervais, James Spader and Catherine Tate will all be guest starring as well.
• Director Sidney Lumet passes away at age 86: Lumet died this morning of lymphoma and was the director of some classic films including Network, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon and 12 Angry Men.

Blowing up the Internet today is this pretty awesome video everyone is assuming was made to promote either a new game or a new movie. Posted by the profile “MortalKombatRebirth”  the video stars Michael Jai White as Jax and Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade and features a pretty awesome fight scene between Baraka and Johnny Cage.  Jax wants Scorpion to go find Shang Tsung and his underground fighting tournament and eliminate everyone involved.  E3 is next week so it could be to promote a new game but places like CHUD are saying it’s for a new movie.  If this was the direction for a new Mortal Kombat movie, I would definitely be on board.  Check out the video below.

*Update* 6/9- We learned today that the video is actually a proof of concept by director Kevin Tancharoen and produced by Universal to see how an R rated, gritty reboot of Mortal Kombat would go over.  Considering it exploded the internet yesterday, I’d say there’s at least some interest.

The Uncharted movie is being written by Kyle Ward.  Ward also wrote the script for a movie adaptation of the game Kane and Lynch, a Heatesque action/crime game.  He is also set to write a script for Hitman 2.  Yes, you heard right, a sequel to the absolutely atrocious Hitman.  I don’t remember that movie making that much movie but apparently it made enough to warrant a sequel.  No word on whether Timothy Olyphant will be back as Agent 47 but I kind of hope not as he was not the slighest bit intimidating or believable as the bald assassin.

Pick of the Week: Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder is neck and neck with Step Brothers for the funniest movie of the year. Ben Stiller directs and stars as Tugg Speedman, an Arnold like Action Star who is the lead in the fictional Tropic Thunder movie alongside Robert Downey Jr’s oscar whore Kirk Lazerus and Jack Black’s comedian bad boy Jeff Portnoy. There’s some great supporting performances by Danny McBride, Matthew McConaughey, Brandon T. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Steve Coogan and Nick Nolte. Argueably the best part of the movie though is Tom Cruise as the pissed off, overweight movie producer Les Grossman. There’s an unrated and regular version of the movie and there’s audio commentary from Downey, Black and Stiller. The best special feature however is probably “Rain of Madness” the fake documentary about the fake movie “Tropic Thunder”. German documentarian Jan Jurgen talks to the stars to find out the inside story on the most expensive movie ever made.
