Tons of news this week including details about a bunch of sequels, Joe Carnahan remaking Death Wish, images from Dredd and Skyfall and much more.

Full Cast and Plot revealed for “Riddick”: It’s been eight years since “The Chronicles of Riddick” came out and Vin Diesel and director David Twohy have been fighting for funding for a third movie in the franchise and they were finally able to get it on track this year. The cast and plot was revealed this week and it sounds more in line with Pitch Black, which is a good thing, and follows Riddick as he’s left for a dead on a planet full of deadly alien predators and must fight his way to an emergency beacon so he has a chance to be rescued by a shipful of mercenaries. Karl Urban, Jordi Molla, Katee Sackhoff, Matt Nable and Bokheem Woodbine co-star.

Insidious 2 in the works: Insidious was one of the surprise horror hits of 2010 and made a crapload of money for a $1.5 million budget. Insidious 2 is now in the works with director James Wan back along with screenwriter Leigh Whannell. No word if Patrick Wilson or Rose Byrne will return or what the movie will be about.

Adam Sandler starring in Candy Land: In what I think is one of the signs of the apocalypse, Adam Sandler will be starring in the adaptation of the board game Candy Land for Columbia Pictures. There’s no mention about what the plot will be but it will probably follow a group of kids making their way through the various candy themed areas of Candy Land with Sandler as their guide.

Robocop remake being rewritten by Gran Torino writer: After Darren Aronofsky left the project, the remake of Robocop went a little dormant but it’s apparently being rewritten by Nick Schenk, who wrote the screenplay for Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino. Jose Padilha, director of Elite Squad, is signed on to direct.

Stretch Armstrong movie changes studios, drops Taylor Lautner: Universal had a bunch of Hasbro properties in various states of production but one of them, Stretch Armstrong, has moved to Relativity Media and Taylor Lautner and director Rob Letterman are both off the project.

Joe Carnahan directing and writing Death Wish remake: Joe Carnahan, currently riding high with The Grey, is signed on to direct and write a remake of the Charles Bronson classic, Death Wish. Frank Grillo, who has had great supporting roles in the aforementiond The Grey and also last year’s Warrior, is set to star and the movie will be set in a Collateral/Drive style Los Angeles.

Matthew Vaughn signed on for X-Men First Class sequel: I’m on board for anything they do.

New Images from Skyfall and Dredd:

This week in movie news we found out about possible and definite projects for a number of directors, another classic movie getting remade and the inventor of movie trailers passes away.

Guy Ritchie possibly directing The Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie: Originally supposed to be a Steven Soderbergh project, Soderbergh recently dropped out and now rumors are that Guy Ritchie might be stepping in to direct an adaptation of the classic 1960′s spy TV show. The show starred Robert Vaughn, Barbara Moore, Alexander Waverly and David McCallum and followed the adventures of American spy Napoleon Solo and Russian spy Illya Kuryakin as they battled the evil organization THRUSH for international organization UNCLE. I think if Guy Ritchie was to come on board and apply the Sherlock Holmes mix of grit and humor, it could be pretty cool.

American Psycho being remade: Last week we found out that Starship Troopers was being remade and now we found out that Lionsgate is moving forward with a new version of American Psycho and have hired a screenwriter. The original movie is a cult classic, put Christian Bale on the map and is one of the rare movies that is generally agreed upon to be better than the novel it’s based on, so there’s even less reason for this new version to exist. There is basically no chance of even finding anyone who could match Christian Bale’s amazing, unhinged performance of murderer Patrick Bateman (well, maybe Miles Fisher)

Neil Marshall directing Hellfest: Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday, Centurion) is a very divisive director, you either love his super violent, cheesy, genre movies or you think he’s a hack (I’m completely on the love side BTW). Marshall’s next project is the horror movie “Hellfest” and follows a group of unsuspecting visitors to a theme park on Halloween where a costumed killer starts murdering people.

Peter Weller joins Star Trek 2: Robocop himself, Peter Weller, is now cast in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek sequel. No information about who he’s playing.

24 Movie could start shooting in Spring: Something we’re definitely excited for is the long in development 24 movie. Apparently a new draft of the script is due to be turned in and, if it’s approved, shooting could start in April of next year, when Keifer will be available. Keifer is due to return to the small screen early next year on Tim Kring’s “Touch”.

Joesph Farrell, the man who invented movie trailers, passes away: Joesph Farrell, who came up with the concept of showing trailers before movies, passed away this past Wednesday at the age of 76. Farrell founded the National Research Group and, along with trailers, also created the idea of test screening movies and the four marketing “quadrants” of men and women under and over 25.

Universal Studios closing the Jaws ride in January: Following on the heels of other classic Universal Studios Orlando rides like Back to the Future that have been closed, Jaws: The Ride is being shut down in January to make room for an “exciting NEW experience”. The Studios part of Universal has sort of become the second tier park to Islands of Adventure, especially in the wake of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opening. The Jaws ride was a great classic boat ride, sort of a more exciting version of Jungle Cruise over at Disney. I’m wondering if they are closing it to make room for a version of the Transformers ride, the first of which just opened in the Singapore.

Rifftrax debuts the Riffplayer: This week Rifftrax debuted their revolutionary new RiffPlayer, a downloadable application that allows you to automatically sync up your Rifftrax audio files to your DVDs. You open a DVD with the RiffPlayer, open the MP3 and the application keeps them synced up and you can resync if they get out of sync. There is a list of compatible Riffs on the Rifftrax website.

Manos: The Hands of Fate coming to Blu Ray: I think Nostradamus made some kind of prediction about if Manos was ever seen in high quality, it would open a portal to hell but we’ll be tempting fate in the near future as a, possibly psychotic, individual named Ben has found the original 16mm print of Manos: The Hands of Fate, one of the most infamous MST3K episodes ever and one of the worst movies ever made. Ben has a website called www.manosinhd.com.

Steven Seagal’s “True Justice” coming to Reelz Channel: We’ve been hearing about this weird Steven Seagal, scripted TV show for a while but now we now that it is coming to Reelz Channel, who scooped up the controversial “The Kennedys” miniseries earlier this year from History Channel. True Justice stars Steven Seagal as Elijah Kane (perfect Seagal character name BTW), head of an elite Seattle police unit of undercover cops trying to take down the worst of the worst of the cities criminals. The show is scheduled to debut in March of next year.

The Raid coming to US theaters in the spring: Indonesian action movie “The Raid” made a huge splash at the Toronto International Film Festival a couple months ago and Sony quickly snapped up the rights and are planning on making a remake of it but the original should be coming to, probably limited, theaters sometime next Spring. Sony had Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda working on a new score for the movie and the best guess is that as soon as it’s done and the movie is re-edited, it will make it’s way to US theaters.

Starship Troopers remake on the way: Sony has recently tasked the screenwriters of Thor and X-Men: First Class to get started on a new version of Starship Troopers, which joins Robocop and Total Recall as remakes of Paul Verhoeven movies. The original Starship Troopers is beloved by many whether you think it’s a masterpiece of satire or just an incredibly hilarious/violent action movie. I don’t think any movie could match Verhoeven’s over the top take but they could distance themselves by hewing more toward the original Robert Heinlein novel, which was incredibly serious and dark and featured the titular troopers using mechanical power armor to fight, not just Arachnids, but various other alien species. That seems to be the route that the Total Recall remake is going and I think if they made it like an intergalactic Hurt Locker or something, it could be pretty interesting.

Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill go undercover as high school students to flush out drug dealers in the upcoming action/comedy remake of the 80's "classic", 21 Jump Street.

The remakes of old television shows continues into 2012 with a remake of the Johnny Depp/Richard Grieco 80′s “classic”, 21 Jump Street. The new movie follows Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as former high school enemies who become friends while in the police academy, with Hill helping Tatum with the written exams while Tatum helps Hill with the physical tests. The guys graduate but are relegated to bicycle patrol in a park. After almost making a great drug bust, the pair are transferred to the recently reinstated Jump Street undercover division and sent to the local high school to pose as students and figure out where a new synthetic drug is coming from. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum look like they might be funny together but the supporting cast looks like it might make it worth watching including Rob Riggle, Ice Cube and Ron Fucking Swanson himself, Nick Offerman. It’s been a while since there’s been a great action/comedy (last one was probably Hot Fuzz) and while this one doesn’t look great, it seems like it could be funny. Check out the red band trailer below and the movie is out next March.

The Thing

Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Erik Christian Olsen

Directed by: Matthijs van Heijningen

Plot: A Norwegian science team in Antarctica discovers an alien craft and an alien lifeform in the ice and they bring in an American paleontologist to examine it. The creature escapes and uses it’s ability to mimic other beings to start killing and replacing the crew.

Rotten Tomatoes Freshness: 34%

Critic Consensus: “It serves the bare serviceable minimum for a horror flick, but The Thing is all boo-scares and a slave to the far superior John Carpenter version”

Footloose

Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Andie McDowell, Dennis Quaid

Directed by: Craig Brewer

Plot: Boston native Ren MacCormack moves to the small southern town of Bomont, where dancing in public has been banned following a tragic event in the town’s past.

RT Freshness: 72%

Critic Consensus: “While it hews closely to the 1984 original, Craig Brewer infuses his Footloose remake with toe-tapping energy and manages to keep the story fresh for a new generation”

The Big Year

Starring: Steve Martin, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Brian Dennehy, Anjelica Huston

Directed by: David Frankel

Plot: A trio of friendly bird watching rivals embark on a year long competition across America to see who can spot the most species of birds.

RT Freshness: 39%

Critic Consensus: “Though made with care and affection for its characters, The Big Year plods along, rarely reaching any comedic heights”

The original Conan launched the career of our patron saint, Arnold Schwarzenegger, so the remake has some big shoes to fill. Is it a worthy remake or should it have been cut in half with a broadsword?

The role that gave kicked off the career of our patron saint, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is now in the hands of Game of Thrones/Stargate: Atlantis actor Jason Momoa. Promising to be closer to the original Robert E Howard stories, the movie is a decent fantasy action movie but definitely doesn’t do anything too new and doesn’t really live up to the legend of the Arnold original.

This new Conan was literally born on the battlefield as his mother is stabbed in the womb and Conan must be cut out of it by his father. Young Conan learns the ways of the sword from his father but eventually his whole village is slaughtered by troops of Khalar Zym, a warlord who wants to collect the pieces of an ancient mask that will grant him the power to conquer all of the continent of Hyboria. Conan escapes the carnage and sets out on a life of adventuring but constantly seeks word of Zym so he can get his revenge. He may get his chance when he comes to the rescue of a lovely female monk who Zym wants for her connection to an ancient bloodline.

Arnold as Conan in the original was a deadly warrior but he was also constantly getting drunk and sleeping with women. Jason Momoa goes for a more intense and brooding portrayal of the Cimmerian warrior but he doesn’t have a lot charisma or charm and mainly just growls out his lines and does cool poses with his swords. Young Conan (played by Leo Howard) actually seems like he would be a much more interesting character to follow and I would definitely watch a whole movie of Young Conan and his dad Ron Perlman making swords and killing dudes. One of the best fight scenes of the movie actually goes to young Conan as he fights a bunch of crazy savages in the woods outside his village. Stephen Lang, who jumped into the genre spotlight as Col. Quaritch in Avatar, is always a good choice for your bad guy but Zym doesn’t really do anything that interestingly evil or bad ass and is definitely not on the level of James Earl Jones creepy performance as Thula Doom in the original. Of the two ladies in the movie, Rose McGowan is probably the more interesting, as she chews scenery as Zym’s evil sorceress daughter Marique. Rachel Nichols, who you probably saw most recently in GI Joe: Rise of Cobra as Scarlett, seems like she’s going to be an ass kicking heroine but quickly devolves into a damsel in distress to the point where, in the last half hour, her dialogue consists almost entirely of screaming. Something I wish that the movie would have had more of, if only to make it more entertaining, was the narration by, of all people, Morgan Freeman. Freeman introduces the ridiculous backstory of Hyboria and then gives a quick update on Conan’s adult life and then disappears. The movie would have been a lot more fun if Morgan Freeman was delivering exposition and it would have actually been in tone with the original Conan, which featured tons of voice over from Mako.

Action wise, there’s a few interesting sequences, the aforementioned fight with young Conan is intense and well done and there’s a great sequence where Conan has to fight these zombie sand warriors that Marique conjurs up. These sand zombie warriors are constantly erupting out of the sand and backflipping back into the sand to dodge Conan’s attacks. The first part of the final battle between Conan and Zym was pretty interesting as well, as they were battling on a falling circular alter with Rachel Nichols tied up in the middle and the altar rotating in the middle of the fight. Most of the action is your typical fantasy action of guys getting slashed by swords and shot with arrows though, and you can only see it so many times before it gets boring. I do appreciate the fact that director Marcus Nispel chose to use a lot of practical effects but some more creative violence and kills would have made the movie a lot more entertaining. I can’t help but wonder what the movie would have been like if a director like Neil Marshall had been at the helm. Nispel definitely does cover his fantasy bases though as there’s a fight sequence on a pirate ship, magic, a deadly snake monster and more.

Conan is a watchable, fun at times, fantasy action movie that is definitely a step up from the director’s previous effort, Pathfinder, but is definitely not going to become a classic of the genre. It’s probably not going to be the start of a whole new Conan franchise (especially considering it’s box office performance) and Jason Momoa is certainly not the next Arnold but if you’re a fan of the genre I would say it’s worth a matinee screening (definitely not 3D though) or definitely a DVD/Blu Ray rent

3 out of 5

Riding great reviews and it's classic name brand, Rise of the Planet of the Apes easily dominated the weekend box office.

After ten years of lying in wait, the Planet of the Apes franchise came thundering back this weekend as Rise of the Planet of the Apes easily took the weekend with $54 million, the fifth best August opening of all time. It was less than the Tim Burton remake of the original made on it’s opening weekend but that movie benefited from being based on the original classic while Rise is essentially a remake of the fourth sequel, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, a slightly less beloved movie. Reversing their roles from last weekend, The Smurfs moved past Cowboys & Aliens for the second spot with $21 million while the latter made another $15.7 million. Fourth place went to The Change Up with a middling $13.5 million, which is terrible compared to the other R rated comedies that have been released this year and it’s also terrible compared to other recent “body swap” comedies like 17 Again, Freaky Friday and 13 Going on 30. Captain America rounded out the top 5 with $13 million. In other box office news, Harry Potter is expected to become the highest grossing movie of the year by tomorrow, taking the title away from Transformers.

Arnold starring in The Last Stand as first movie back: Arnold has had a myriad of personal problems as of late but he is still returning to movies in the near future and his first movie back on screen will be The Last Stand, directed by Korean director Kim Ji-Woon, who most recently directed I Saw the Devil. The Last Stand will find Arnold as a small town sheriff whose town becomes the last place US authorities will be able to stop the most dangerous drug kingpin in the country. The kingpin has a specially modified car, a hostage and an army of gang members.

Evil Dead remake moving forward: There’s been talks about an Evil Dead 4 since Army of Darkness came out in 1992. There were rumblings this week that eventually were confirmed as official that a remake of the first Evil Dead is going to be underway. Sam Raimi will produce while Fede Alvarez will direct. Diablo Cody *shudder* has also been named as one of the screenwriters. Bruce Campbell was talking about the movie on Twitter but it’s not clear whether he would star or perhaps just have a cameo.

Godzilla gets a screenwriter: The upcoming reboot of Godzilla from Legendary Pictures has gotten Batman Begins/Blade screenwriter David Goyer to write the script.

Netflix announces price increase for service: Pissing off pretty much every subscriber this week, Netflix announced that, starting immediately for new members and September for existing members, they would by charging $7.99 each for streaming and one DVD at a time services. If you want both, which costs current members around $11, it’s going to be 15.99 (plus more for Blu Ray).

It's been under the radar for a while but the prequel to John Carpenter's classic The Thing has reemerged today with a new poster and trailer.

Something we haven’t heard anything about in a while, the prequel to John Carpenter’s classic The Thing, has reemerged today with a new poster and this first trailer. This new movie in the The Thing universe follows the ill fated Norwegian research team in Antarctica, whose survivors are seen briefly in the beginning of the movie chasing the The Thing infected dog and are responsible for finding the The Thing and it’s spacecraft in the Antarctic ice. Mary Elisabeth Winstead plays a paleontologist who is brought the the Norwegian base camp to examine the find but, of course, the alien life form escapes and starts infecting the researchers. It definitely has the feel of the original but I’m wondering how exciting it will be when we know exactly what the end will be and I’m also wondering if it can survive everyone comparing it to the original. Check out the trailer and decide for yourself and the movie is out this October.

There's actually news this week about Django Unchained, a new Jason Statham movie, the possible inspiration for the Daredevil remake and King Kong getting yet another version.

Roland Emmerich being offered the Asteroids movie: Master of Disaster, Roland Emmerich, is apparently being offered the director’s chair for the movie version of the classic arcade game Asteroids. There is still no idea how the game would be translated to a movie but I would be interested if it would be Emmerich’s version of Armageddon.

Daredevil Reboot following the “Born Again” storyline: Rumors were swirling around this week that the upcoming Daredevil reboot, being directed by David Slade, will be based on the Frank Miller/David Mazzuccheli storyline, “Born Again”, where the Kingpin discovers that the Daredevil is Matt Murdock and makes his life a living hell.

Killer Elite coming out in September: Announced this week was a new action movie starring Jason Statham called Killer Elite, inspired by a true story. Statham will play an ex-special forces soldier who must come to the rescue of his mentor after he’s kidnapped by a team of assassins. Making this movie seem even cooler is that Robert De Niro will be the mentor and Clive Owen will be the leader of the assassins.

Leonardo DiCaprio in talks to be the villain of Django Unchained: We’ve been hearing little bits about Tarantino’s upcoming movie, Django Unchained, and the latest bit is that Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to play the villain of the movie, a wealthy plantation owner. In other bit of Django news, Will Smith starring seems to be becoming less of a possibility every day and the new three front runners are Idris Elba, Chris Tucker and Jamie Foxx.

King Kong being remade yet again: Fox Animation is apparently making yet another version of King Kong after the original, the 1976 version and the Peter Jackson version. This new version will be animated and will follow the story from Kong’s perspective.

Debuting in front of Priest this weekend is the trailer for this Summer’s remake of the 80′s vampire flick Fright Night. Actually, it’s more of the condensed 3 minute of the whole movie, as pretty much all the major plot points are revealed in the trailer. The movie follows a teen, Charley (Anton Yelchin), who has a new neighbor, Jerry (Colin Farell), move in and people in town start disappearing. His friend (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) believes the neighbor is a vampire and Charley eventually agrees and enlists his favorite TV magician (David Tennant) to take Jerry down before he kills/turns his girlfriend. On top of showing pretty much the whole movie, this remake also seems way too serious and trying to hard to be “dark”. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it but I’m pretty sure the original was more of a horror comedy. The remake is out this August and you can check out the trailer below.
