With their major action figure lines already having big screen adaptations (GI Joe, Transformers), Hasbro has been pushing for their board games to start getting movie adaptations. Ouija, Candyland, Monopoly are all in various stages of development but the first one out of the gate is Peter Berg’s version of Battleship.  Starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker and Alexander Skarsgard, Battleship follows a Naval fleet that is participating in an international war game when they discover a mysterious wreckage.  Upon investigating, the fleet is enveloped in an energy bubble and comes under attack from alien ships.  I will watch anything with Liam Neeson in action mode and I’ve loved some of Peter Berg’s previous movies (The Rundown in particular) but this movie looks fucking ridiculous.  The aliens are literally shooting the pegs from the board game at the ships!  This seems like someone watched Battle: LA and thought, “I wonder what the Navy was doing while the Army was fighting in Los Angeles?”  The movie will be out next May and you check out the trailer below.

I, like most people, are still reeling from the disaster that was Revenge of the Fallen but there’s possibly more pain on the way next year when Transformers: Dark of the Moon explodes into theaters.  The first teaser trailer debuted late last night online and there’s surprisingly almost no Transformers in it.  Instead we follow the Apollo 11 crew as they make their historic landing on the moon.  However, they have an alternate mission then just collecting rocks; there’s a massive wrecked ship on the dark side of the moon that contains a Transformer (speculation is that it’s Alpha Trion, one of the original 13 Transformers).  The plot of the movie supposedly revolves around a conspiracy involving the Transformers involvement with the space race and other events in the past.  Both Michael Bay and Shia LaBouef have kind of apologized for Revenge so hopefully they can reel in all the bullshit and return to the standard of the first movie.  Check out the trailer below and the movie is out on July 1st of next year.

• True Lies: The Series: James Cameron announced this week that he’s going to bring True Lies to the small screen.  I think I speak for everyone when we say we love True Lies but I don’t how it would work as a series, especially with no Arnold and crazy action set pieces like the Harrier jet attack.  Also we’ve seen enough TV shows based on movies to know it’s extremely hard to do (Timecop and Highlander say hi).
• Goosebumps Film Franchise in the works: Expect a tangent filled discussion about this on the podcast but apparently Columbia wants to create a franchise based on the book series.  Disturbia screenwriter Carl Ellsworth is writing the first movie but no word yet on what book will kick off the series.
• I’m Still Here fake: Well that didn’t take very long.  Casey Affleck confirmed this week that he and Joaquin Phoenix’s “documentary” I’m Still Here was all an elaborate prank, which means Joaquin might be the greatest actor of all time considering how batshit insane he was for the past 1 1/2 – 2 years.
• Deadliest Warrior: The Movie: Shawn Levy, director of Night at the Museum and the upcoming robot boxing movie Real Steel is looking to bring the ridiculous Spike show Deadliest Warrior to the big screen.  I don’t know how the hell this would work, would a bunch of warriors get sucked through time and start fighting each other?
• Possible Voltron concept art: A piece of possible concept art for the upcoming Voltron movie was released.  It looks heavily influenced by Michael Bay’s Transformers movies, with all the sharp edges and complicated bullshit.

• Plot Synopsis for Fast Five: How excited is everyone for a fifth Fast and Furious movie!?  The official plot synopsis came out this week and the gang finds itself in Brazil after breaking Dom out of a prison bus at the end of Fast and Furious.  Other details are that Ludacris and Tyrese Gibbons, who were in 2 Fast 2 Furious, will be back in this one and that The Rock will be playing an aggressive federal agent who will be leading a team into Brazil to bring the crew back at any cost.

We got some details yesterday about what we can expect for Transformers 3, including that it’s going to be in 3D.  Other details include:

• Michael Bay wants to get rid of what he calls “the dorky comedy” and specifically mentioned the Twins, saying they will have a drastically reduced role in 3.  John Turturro will be back to provide “comic relief”.
• Sam is going to be trying to get a job and transition into adulthood, obviously without his girlfriend Mikaela though.
• The plot will delve more into the Transformers role in human history, specifically how they influenced the space race between the US and the USSR.  One of the sets is being described as a broken down nuclear facility.
• This will be the final chapter and Bay claims they are really working on making a “killer ending”
• Finally probably the most interesting thing is that the villain this time will be Shockwave.  In the Transformers universe, Shockwave was the Decepticon who Megatron left in charge of Cybertron while he took his attack force to Earth.  Shockwave’s alternate form was a laser cannon.

No surprises here as GI Joe took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $56.2 million, which apparently puts it more in line with Vin Diesel’s XXX then it’s Transforming cousins. Counter Programming seemed to work this weekend as Julie and Julia came in second place with a little over $20 million. The other new release, A Perfect Getaway, came in seventh with just about $5.8 million. Meanwhile, the epic battle between guinea pigs and wizards continues to rage as the two swapped places again with G-Force going to third and Harry Potter going to fourth. Last week’s number one, Funny People, dropped down to fifth. Finally, as it continues to add theaters, (500) Days of Summer moved into the top ten and Transformers and The Hangover finally moved out of it.

Not a very strong weekend at the box office but Funny People managed to pull out the win with $23.4 million, which was under industry estimates. It’s also the lowest opening for Adam Sandler since Little Nicky (ouch!). Harry Potter managed to top the rodents of G-Force this weekend earning $17.7 million to the guinea pigs little over $17 million. Aliens in the Attic took the fifth place spot with $7.8 million and the other new movie, The Collector, opened in eleventh place. Transformers is hanging on to the top ten in tenth place and The Hangover IS STILL IN THE TOP TEN in it’s ninth week of release at number 8 and has made over $255 million this summer.

In news that is suprising to no one, Harry Potter dominated the box office this weekend. The Boy Who Lived took in almost $79.5 million over the weekend and it’s total gross for last week was over $159 million. Looks like there’s still some Harry Potter mania left. Ice Age 3 and Transformers 2 were a distant second and third with Ice Age making a little over $17 million and Transformers making a little over $13 million. Bruno dropped down to fourth place with an almost 72% drop off from last week. Finally, The Hangover continues to hang out near the middle of the pack, this week at number 5. It’s made over $235 million in total this summer.

Bruno strutted his way to number one this weekend with $30.4 at the box office. Ice Age 3 took over the number two spot, with Transformers 2 coming in third. Transformers 2 has racked up almost $340 million in it’s three weeks domestically. Rounding out the top 5 was The Proposal at number 4 and Public Enemies at number 5. The other new wide release movie, I Love You, Beth Cooper, came in seventh place with $5 million, beating Up but not The Hangover. Harry Potter is a potential juggernaut this weekend but is Harry Potter mania over? We’ll have to wait and see.
