A huge night for Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurt Locker as she took home Best Director and the movie took home both Sound awards, Best Screenplay and Best Picture.  Avatar won most of the other technical awards like Visual Effects and Cinematography.  The acting categories were not really that surprising except for Sandra Bullock, who won Best Actress, but she’s also the Worst Actress as well so I guess they cancel each other out.  Check out all the winners below and definitely check out the transcript of our live blog for more thoughts.

Looks like Harry Potter can take on Death Eaters and Voldermort anytime of the day but he can’t deal with government trained guinea pigs. Yes, G-Force took the win at the box office this week with a little over $32 million followed by the boy wizard with $30 million. The two other new movies came in at 3 and fourth with The Ugly Truth making $27 million and Orphan making $12.7 million. Up finally dropped out of the top ten, landing in eleventh and Bruno looks on the verge of dropping off the top ten as well. (500) Days of Summer is only in 85 theaters and is only off Bruno by about a $1 million. This weekend’s big release is Judd Apatow’s Funny People but can that take the top spot away from the rodents?

Bruno strutted his way to number one this weekend with $30.4 at the box office. Ice Age 3 took over the number two spot, with Transformers 2 coming in third. Transformers 2 has racked up almost $340 million in it’s three weeks domestically. Rounding out the top 5 was The Proposal at number 4 and Public Enemies at number 5. The other new wide release movie, I Love You, Beth Cooper, came in seventh place with $5 million, beating Up but not The Hangover. Harry Potter is a potential juggernaut this weekend but is Harry Potter mania over? We’ll have to wait and see.

So technically Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs won the box office since it came out on Wednesday and made over $67 million in total. However, the interesting thing is that over the holiday weekend Ice Age and Transformers tied with $42.5 million each. Michael Mann’s latest, Public Enemies, came in third with $26.1 million. The Proposal, The Hangover and Up all continued to hang in there coming in fourth thru sixth. Will Bruno be able to strut his way to the top next week?

Add up the other top 10 movies and you probably only have about half of what Transformers 2 made at the box office this weekend. The bots scored 60.6 million on opening day and 201 million over it’s first 5 days, which is second only to The Dark Knight. It’s the best opening of the summer, and probably the year. The Proposal, The Hangover and Up all moved down a space and the other new movie, My Sister’s Keeper, came in at number 5.

You know it’s a slow weekend when the big movie is The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock. It managed to take the top spot with $34.1 million. Hanging in strong was the power duo of The Hangover and Up, both moving down a slot to 2nd and 3rd respectively. Rounding out the top 5 was the other new movie, Year One, at 4th and The Taking of Pelham 123 in 5th. Big dogs Star Trek and Terminator Salvation are still in the top ten, as well as (the actually pretty good) Night at the Museum 2. Of course all this is pretty moot as Transformers is coming out on Wednesday and looking to steamroll anyone in it’s path.

Welcome to our new feature “Battle at the Box Office”, where we see how things went down over the multiplex. This week’s big release, The Taking of Pelham 123, debuted at number 3 despite the formidable combo of Denzel Washington and John Travolta’s scary handlebar mustache and neck tats. The Hangover and UP retained their top spots at numbers one and two respectively. Rounding out the top 5 were Night at the Museum 2 and Land of the Lost. The only other new movie, Eddie Murphy’s Imagine That, debuted at 6 and keeps up Eddie Murphy’s impeccable recent record of bombs and general public apathy.

Quantum of Solace is finally out this week and nothing else really matters, does it?  The movie studios seem to agree as nothing else is coming out in wide release.  So because of that it’s time for another addition of Trailer Park as well.

Watchmen

Zach: It seems like every time we do a Trailer Park there’s a new Watchmen trailer.  This is the one that will show before QoS this weekend.  It reveals more of the actual plot so that people who aren’t obsessed with the comic will be able to gain some semblance of what is going on.  Not since the Cola wars have there two groups as bitterly divided as the Watchmen fans.  Some are seeing this as the second coming, others are already building effegies of Zack Synder.  We’ll have to wait till 2009 to see who is proven right.

Brian: I don’t consider myself much of a comic book — excuse me, GRAPHIC NOVEL — fan, so I will judge this on the simple fact of it being a movie. Looks good. This seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it type film, which might be how it does at the box office: soar high, or crash and burn. So far, my money’s on the former.

2012

Zach: The newest movie from Roland Emmerich who is not one of the most beloved directors in the world.  He made ID4 but on the other hand he made Godzilla 1998, The Day After Tomorrow and the horrible 10,000 B.C. so not really excited at all for this one.  If you’re up on your conspiracy internet babble then you know that according to the Mayan calendar the world is going to end in 2012.  It looks like Roland thinks that the end is going to be a giant flood.  There’s not much to go on in the trailer but my excitement is at “meh”.

Brian: Teaser doesn’t say much, but it does give me a Deep Impact/Day After Tomorrow vibe. That is to say… not good.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Zach: New trailer for the upcoming remake of the 1951 classic “The Day the Earth Stood Still” starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly.  It looks pretty good, Keanu as an emotionless alien is perfect casting and the special effects look really good.  Gort especially looks fucking awesome.  I might check this out when it comes out in December but I’ll have to wait and see what the consenus is first.

Brian: Still lukewarm about this film. Have a feeling it’s going to get too preachy. Plus, there’s too many remakes already!

Up

Zach: What else can you say? It’s a new Pixar movie and even the worst Pixar movie is 10x better than most anything else that comes out in the same year.  A grumpy old man decides to attach hundreds of balloons to his house and take off on an adventure.  That’s pretty much all we know except it’s being directed by the same guy who did Monsters Inc.  I don’t know if they’ll be able to top Wall-E but I have faith in Pixar that they’ll deliver a fun movie.

Brian: It seems that each Pixar movie that comes out, the more wacky/different the plot is. WALL-E was unlike any other popular animated film I’ve seen and Up seems to have just enough quirkyness to differentiate itself from the pack. Besides that, can Pixar PLEASE stop giving itself a handjob with these stupid previous movie clips before showing the trailer? C’mon.
