I don’t know what started this weird trend for next year of gritty takes on fairy tales but add Jack the Giant Killer next to Snow White and the Huntsman and, to a lesser extent, Mirror, Mirror. Directed by Bryan Singer, the movie follows Jack as he comes into possession of some magical beans and accidentally causes them to grow into a massive beanstalk that allows an ancient race of giants to come into the human’s world and reignite an ancient war.  Jack must climb the beanstalk and rescue the princess of the kingdom, who got caught in Jack’s house when it went up with the stalk.  Singer co-wrote the script with his long time collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie, and the movie stars Nicolas Hoult (Beast in X-Men: First Class) as Jack.  Singer’s last couple movies haven’t been that great but this looks like it could be a pretty good fantasty adventure.  Jack the Giant Killer is out next summer and you can check out the trailer below.

X-Men: First Class has had some ups and downs with it’s advertising campaign.  The original teaser trailer was fantastic, the character specific posters were atrocious and now we have the first full theatrical trailer, which returns to the up side of the chart.  James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender star as Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr respectively in the early days of the X-Men universe as they help train the first group of X-Men which includes Mystique, Havok, Beast and Azazel.  The X-Men eventually have to help defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis before World War III is unleashed and also have to deal with the shady mutant Hellfire Club, led by Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon).  Anything would be better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine but thankfully this looks like a return to the original two Bryan Singer movies in terms of tone and action.  Check out the full trailer below and the movie is out in June.

X-Men: First Class is going to need a bigger classroom, as it seems like every day someone else is getting cast in the movie.  Based on the comic series of the same name, it’s a prequel the follows the founding of Professor X’s school and the first group of mutants that he teaches and trains, which includes Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey, Ice Man and Angel.  The movie is going to change that up a bit and follow more in line with the Bryan Singer X-Men movies. So far the casting is  James McAvoy as young Professor X, Michael Fassbender from Inglourious Basterds is playing Magneto, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Aaron Johnson possibly will be Cyclops and then recently it was announced that Ben Walker (most known as the boy in About a Boy) will be Beast, Caleb Landry Jones (kid on the bike in No Country For Old Men) will be Banshee and Lucas Till (from Walk the Line and others) will play the little brother of Cyclops, Havoc. Kick Ass director Matthew Vaughn is signed on to direct and Bryan Singer is involved in some capacity.  Wolverine left a bad taste in my mouth (cleaned up by the ridiculously awesome game though) so I’m wary of X-Men movies right now, especially as it seems they are trying to cram as many characters in as they possibly can.  Hopefully they can bring it back to the level of the original two Singer movies.

One of the most ambitious movie projects of all time looks to have a director.  Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and Firefly, is in final negotiations to direct the big screen adaptation of Marvel’s Avengers team, which consists of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and possibly the Hulk.  Starting with Iron Man 1, the Marvel movies have started to connect with each other, much in the same way the comics do, with the ultimate goal being that all the movies converge with The Avengers.  Whedon already has experience with comics, apparently his run writing the X-Men was fantastic and I think he’d be able to handle the A-list ensemble cast that will be in the Avengers.  The only thing people are worried about is that Whedon is relatively unproven, movie wise.  His only big screen effort is Serenity, which while fantastic, was pretty low budget and based on his own creation.  Another less certain aspect of this story is the fact that Whedon is going to help rewrite the scripts for both The Avengers and the Captain America movie.  As long as no one asks what happens to a toad when it gets struck by lightning, I think we’ll be good.

I would say that this week is an average week for new releases.  Nothing spectacular is coming out but there’s some interesting things you might want to investigate.

Pick of the Week: JCVD

Jean Claude Van Damme shows that he actually has some acting chops in JCVD. He plays semi-realistic version of himself as he’s engaged in a bitter custody battle and trying to still get good acting roles. While heading back to his hometown to visit the bank he gets caught up in a bank heist and the plot thickens. Van Damme manages to kick some ass but it’s really more of a heist movie/look at Van Damme’s career. He has an amazing monologue in the middle where he talks about his regrets and what he wishes he had been able to do. If you’re a fan of Van Damme like we are then you should definitely check this out to get another side of the Muscles from Brussels.

Pick of the Week: The Wrestler

Personally I feel that Mickey Rourke got robbed at the Oscars this year because he is brilliant as Randy “The Ram” Robinson. It’s the story of how everything outside the ring is falling apart for Randy but when he’s inside it, he still feels like a superstar. There’s some intense wrestling scenes, including a bloody hardcore match-up, some cameos from famous wrestlers and great supporting peformances from Marisa Tomei (who’s naked most of the movie which is always a plus) and Evan Rachel Wood.
