Battle at the Box Office 8/17
Universal continued their year of box office dominance as the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton dominated the box office. Straight Outta Compton made $56 million, putting it ahead of other similar movies like Notorious, Get Rich or Die Trying and 8 Mile and it’s the best opening overall for a musical biopic. Universal has made over $2 billion at the box office this year.
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation dropped to second with another $17 million, putting it over $138 million for it’s domestic gross, passing Mission Impossible III’s total gross.
Fellow espionage action move The Man from UNCLE made $13 million and took third, a disappointing opening for a movie that cost $75 million.
Fantastic Four continued it’s atomic level bombing by dropping almost 70% from opening weekend and only made another $8 million, putting it in fourth place. The movie has made $41 million so far.
The Gift rounded out the top 5 with another $6.5 million.
Nothing else really made any big movements with the only thing of note being Ricki and the Flash dropping from seventh to ninth in it’s second weekend out.
I’m like the J. Jonah Jameson of Everything Action, writing and editing and constantly demanding pictures of Spider-Man.
