Luc Besson seems to finally be delivering a spiritual successor to The Fifth Element with this summer’s sci-fi epic, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Starring Dane DeHaan as Valerian and Cara Delevingne as his partner and love interest Laureline, the pair are intergalactic, time-traveling secret agents who are tasked to uncover who or what is trying to destroy the city of Alpha, where every species in the universe are represented and work together to share their technology and knowledge. There’s an insane amount of aliens, robots, planets and spaceships on the display but I feel like there’s real potential for this to be a spectacular disaster financially a la John Carter, especially since the original source material is basically unknown here in the States (This movie will probably do gangbusters in Europe). I also don’t know if DeHaan and Delevingne are big enough draws as the stars. We’ll find out on July 21st when it hits theaters and you can check out the new trailer below.
I’m like the J. Jonah Jameson of Everything Action, writing and editing and constantly demanding pictures of Spider-Man.
