Battle at the Box Office 5/1

The Fate of the Furious continued to dominate the box office, crossing over $1 billion worldwide and making another $19.4 million to bring it’s domestic total up to over $192 million.  It’s currently the second highest grossing Fast & Furious movie worldwide behind Furious 7, which made $1.5 billion during it’s run, and it’s currently the third highest grossing domestic release behind Beauty and the Beast and Logan.

How to be a Latin Lover took 2nd place with $12 million from 1,118 theaters, giving it over $10,000 per theater and it’s up from star Eugenio Derbez’s previous hit, Instructions Not Included, which made $7 million it’s opening weekend.

In only 425 theaters, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion took in $10.1 million and was the highest ever opening for an Indian film in the US and topped The Circle to take third place.

The Circle made $9.3 million, a far cry from this year’s prior Emma Watson movie, and her worst wide release opening ever, behind things like The Tale of Despereaux.

Boss Baby rounded out the top 5 with another $9 million, putting it over $148 million total so far but it’s still 19th overall in Dreamworks Animation’s library.

Further down the charts, The Lost City of Z dropped out of the top ten despite an expansion, coming in 12th place with another $1.7 million while the week’s other new release, Sleight, made $1.6 million in 525 theaters, which more than makes up for it’s $250,000 budget.

Guardians Vol. 2 is clearly going to dominate as we start Summer Blockbuster season but the question is how high can it go?
