Battle at the Box Office 1/30/23

Avatar: The Way of Water remained at the top of the box office for a seventh straight weekend and now crossing over $2.1 billion worldwide.

Domestically, The Way of Water made another $15.9 million, dropping 21% from last weekend.  It has made over $620.8 million domestically and it is the 11th biggest movie domestically, although it has probably already passed The Avengers to become the 10th biggest movie domestically of all time. Adjusted for inflation, The Way of Water is 30th, although it will definitely pass Home Alone, Beverly Hills Cop, Ghostbusters, and more to most likely get into the top 25 and beyond.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish remained strong, especially coming off the heels of last week’s Best Animated Picture nomination.  Puss in Boots only dropped 11% from last weekend and took in another $10.4 million.  The movie now has $140.7 million domestically and just under $336 million worldwide.

Indian action blockbuster Pathaan took third place in only 695 theaters, making $6.8 million.  It was tracking in fifth place prior to actual numbers coming and surpassed A Man Called Otto and M3GAN.  Pathaan currently has $48.4 million worldwide so far, with most of that coming from India.

A Man Called Otto and M3GAN, as mentioned above, rounded out the top 5.  A Man Called Otto has $45.9 million domestically for 5 weeks out and M3GAN has $82.1 million for 4 weeks out.

Lots of interesting shuffling and entries were further down the list.  The Wandering Earth 2 took 8th place with $3 million in 142 theaters.  The movie was one of the massive blockbusters released in China last weekend for the Chinese New Year celebrations and it has a worldwide gross of $355.5 million.  Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist took 9th place with $2.55 million in 1,388 theaters.  Infinity Pool opened to 10th place with $2.51 million in 1,835 theaters.  It’s the first time in a very long time that all the movies in the top 10 made at least $2 million.

The Wandering Earth 2 took the Per Theater average with $21,173 in each of its 142 theaters.
