The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid arrives in theaters this weekend and while it remains to be seen how it will be received, the bar was set incredibly high by Disney’s 1989 classic, especially in the music department. Crafted by the legendary Alan Menken and the equally legendary Howard Ashman, Menken composed the music while Ashman wrote the lyrics. The cast, including Jodi Benson, Pat Carroll, and Samuel E. Wright, sang the songs for the soundtrack and it is credited as the first Disney movie to bring the Broadway-style musical to animated films, along with kickstarting the Disney Renaissance era of animated films. “Under the Sea” was the breakout song from the soundtrack, winning an Oscar and a Grammy, and the movie score also won an Oscar. The songs have remained iconic over three decades later, with multiple tribute albums released and the songs still being featured in Disney park parades and shows.
