While this weekend’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is only the second big screen outing for the Mario Bros., it’s the latest in a long line of animated projects featuring the famous plumbers, which includes 1990’s The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Like most popular 80s and 90s movies, Bill & Ted got an animated Saturday morning cartoon starting in 1990.  The difference between Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures and other animated shows based on movies was that George Carlin, Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves, and Bernie Casey (who played Mr. Ryan in the films) reprised their roles, at least for the first season.

Following the massive success of Free Willy in 1993, Warner Bros. quickly looked into turning the movie into a franchise, with the sequel, Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home coming out in 1995 and, in between the two films, a truly insane animated series that aired on ABC.  You can watch the first episode here for the latest Everything Action Theater.

Based on the cult Sega Genesis Mutant League sports games, Mutant League ran for two seasons in the mid-90s and followed hot shot skeleton quarterback Bones Justice, who led his team the Monsters in various sports against the corrupt teams of Mutant League commissioner Zalgor Prigg.

Debuting in 1992 on Fox Kids, Dog City was a puppet/animation hybrid series from Jim Henson Productions which followed a puppet animator named Eliot Shag who drew the traditionally animated adventures of private eye Ace Hart, who solved mysteries and battled criminals in the world of Dog City.

Two years after the comic first debuted with the launch of Image Comics, Jim Lee’s WildC.A.T.S came to CBS with a Saturday morning animated series that lasted for 13 episodes from fall 1994 to winter 1995.

After the release of Virtua Fighter 1 and 2, Sega worked with animation studio TMS to bring Virtua Fighter to TV with an anime series that debuted in Japan in October of 1995 and lasted 35 episodes until June 1996. The series followed Akira Yuki as he tried to see the “eight stars of heaven” and work with other fighters to save Sarah Bryant from an evil scientist.

Created by action movie legend Steven E. De Souza and based on the comic Xenozoic Tales by Mark Schultz, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs aired for one season starting in 1993 and followed the adventures of Hannah Dundee and Jack Tenrec in a post-apocalyptic world full of classic cars and revived prehistoric monsters.
