Despite being basically brand new to the general public, audiences came out in droves to see Star Lord, Rocket, Groot, Gamora and Drax as Guardians had the biggest August opening ever and the third best opening of 2014.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes remained on top for another week with The Purge: Anarchy being a decent second while Sex Tape and Planes: Fire & Rescue both had mediocre openings.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes rode it’s wave of critical acclaim to a $70+ million opening weekend and releasing the box office from the cold, idiotic hands of Transformers.
