Battle at the Box Office 11/13/23

The Marvels took the top spot at the box office this past weekend but Disney and Marvel are most likely not celebrating, as it was the lowest opening ever for the MCU.

The Marvels opened to $46.1 million, down even from Sunday’s low projections.  That is by far the lowest opening in the MCU, replacing 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which previously held the low record with $55.4 million.  Worldwide, The Marvels has $108.9 million so far.  The Marvel cost around $275 million, not counting promotions and advertisements, and it could lose Disney and Marvel a massive chunk of change. The test will be this coming weekend to see how it holds up against The Ballad of Songbird and Serpents.  If it craters in its second weekend, this will be another box office disaster in a year of box office disasters for Disney, like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Haunted Mansion, which will both lose the studio 100s of millions of dollars.  The movie also got a B CinemaScore, which isn’t that great when looking to see how word of mouth will be.  That means that the audience who went to see it generally enjoyed it but weren’t ecstatic about it and probably won’t be gushing to friends and family to go see it.

Five Nights at Freddy’s dropped to third with another $8.9 million, bringing it to $127.2 million domestically and $252.3 million worldwide.  While it was incredibly front-heavy, this is one of the biggest hits of the year, and expect to see news about a sequel soon.

In what is supposed to be the final weekend of The Eras Tour, the concert film took third place with another $5.9 million, taking it to $172.5 million domestically and $240.9 million.  If it can make another $2 million or so before it leaves theaters, it will top Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny to become the 10th highest-grossing movie of 2023.

Priscilla and Killers of the Flower Moon rounded out the top 5.  Priscilla only dropped 5% from last weekend, making another $4,7 million while Killers of the Flower Moon made another $4.5 million.

The Holdovers expanded wide this past weekend, now available in 778 theaters and taking sixth place with $3.2 million.  It’s made $4.2 million so far domestically.  Two new releases, Journey to Bethlehem and Tiger 3 took seventh and eighth place.

The Per Theater average went to A24’s Dream Scenario.  The Nicolas Cage starring movie played in 6 theaters over the weekend and took in $35,925.
